CONCACAFCosta Rica, Mexico open 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with victoriesComplete schedule here!23/7/04 - Mexico and the host Costa Rica opened the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with victories against Trinidad & Tobago and Surinam, respectively at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia on Friday evening.
Midfielder Jesus Contreras scored twice, while defenders Victor Huerta, Arturo Lopez, midfielders Alberto Montiel and Miguel Ángel Olvera each added a goal for Mexico (1-0-0, 3 Points) in the 6:4 Group A victory over Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points). The soca warriors offence was led by forward Jerwyn Balthazar with two goals, while defender Anthony Small and midfielder Ako James each had a tally in the loss.
In another Group A encounter, three goals from forward Yanan Montoya and two each by defender Michael Barrantes, forwards Carlos Chaves, Junior Rodriguez and Jefrid Ruiz led Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a convincing 13:1 victory over Surinam (0-1-0, 0 Points). Forward Johnny Rodriguez added another tally for the ticos, while defender Winston Feller had the only score for the Surinameses in the loss.
The 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship continues at the Palacio de los Deportes on Saturday (24 July), with Group B as the USA takes on Panama at 18:00 and then Guyana meets Cuba at 20:00.
At the conclusion of the first round on 28 July, the top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals on two days later, with the Group B winner taking on the Group A runner-up and the Group A winner facing the runner-up from Group B.
The semifinal losers will face-off in the third-place game on 31 July, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 31 July, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.
CONCACAF has previously staged two Futsal qualifiers for the FIFA World Championships, in 1996 and 2000.
