CONCACAF.comPanama & USA play to historic tie at CONCACAF Futsal Tourney; Cuba tops GuyanaComplete schedule here!24/7/04 - Panama and the USA played to a historic tie at the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica, while in another Group B encounter on Saturday night, Cuba topped Guyana.
The evening began with the first-ever CONCACAF Futsal Tournament match ending in a draw as Panama (0-0-1, 1 Point) held the USA (0-0-1, 1 Point) to a 2:2 result.
The canaleros took a 1:0 lead into halftime after midfielder Gilberto Rangel scored off a double-penalty free kick after the stars & stripes committed their sixth team foul with 23 seconds remaining in the first stanza.
After forward Greg Howes leveled the score in the 26th minute of the second half, the USA took the lead in the 32nd minute-mark with a goal by midfielder Joel Shanker. A few seconds later, Rangel got the equalizer for Panama in the 2:2 final score.
The tie ended a streak of 48 consecutive CONCACAF Futsal games that had a clear cut winner since 1996. The streak includes all matches from the three CONCACAF Futsal Championships (1996, 2000, 2004) as well as the preliminary qualifiers in the Caribbean and North-Central American Zones earlier this year.
Later in the evening at the Palacio de los Deportes, three goals by forward Boris Saname led Cuba (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 10:3 victory over Guyana (0-1-0, 0 Points). Saname’s goals also put him as the all-time goal scoring leader in CONCACAF Futsal Tournament history with nine.
Forward Yosniel Mesa Diaz and defender Adalberto Guerra added to the cubanos scoring spree against the Guyanese with two goals each, while midfielders Fernando Chapman, Eduardo Morales and defender Jose Jacinto Serrano all added a tally in the victory. Forwards Dexter Bentick, Travis Grant and defender Omalie Norman Nassy all scored for Guyana in the loss.
The 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship continues at the Palacio de los Deportes on Sunday (25 July), with Group A as Surinam (0-1-0, 0 Points) takes on Mexico (1-0-0, 3 Points) at 18:00 and then Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3 Points) meets Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points) at 20:00.
At the conclusion of the first round on 28 July, the top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals on two days later, with the Group B winner taking on the Group A runner-up and the Group A winner facing the runner-up from Group B.
The semifinal losers will face-off in the third-place game on 31 July, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 31 July, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.
