CONCACAF.comCosta Rica, Mexico earn berths to semifinals of CONCACAF Futsal ChampionshipComplete schedule here!25/7/04 - Mexico and the host Costa Rica earned berths to the semifinals of the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with victories over Surinam and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively, at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia on Sunday evening.
Mexico (2-0-0, 6 Points) jumped out to a 4:0 lead at the end of the first half, with goals from defenders Guillermo Castañeda, Arturo Lopez, midfielder Jesus Contreras and forward Francisco Ramirez.
In the second half, consecutive scores by Surinam (0-2-0, 0 Points) forward Gino Brandon and defender Roberto Derby cut the deficit to 4:2 in the 23rd minute, but defender Victor Huerta made it 5:2 in favor of Mexico six minutes later.
After midfielder Alberto Montiel gave Mexico a 6:2 lead in the 35th minute, forwards Alberto Doesburg and Roberto Zededa scored 60 seconds later for the Surinamese, but the tricolor held on to the 6:5 victory.
In another Group A encounter, Costa Rica (2-0-0, 6 Points) topped Trinidad & Tobago (0-2-0, 0 Points) 6:1. Forwards Carlos Chaves, Yanan Montoya, Jefrid Ruiz, midfielders Jason Arce, Adonai Vindas and defender Johnny Rodriguez all scored for the ticos, while defender Marvin Lee had the only tally for the soca warriors in the loss.
The 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship continues at the Palacio de los Deportes on Monday (26 July), with Group B as Guyana (0-1-0, 0 Points) takes on the USA (0-0-1, 1 Point) at 18:00 and then Cuba (1-0-0, 3 Points) meets Panama (0-0-1, 1 Point) at 20:00.
At the conclusion of the first round on 28 July, the top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals on two days later, with the Group B winner taking on the Group A runner-up and the Group A winner facing the runner-up from Group B.
The semifinal losers will face-off in the third-place game on 31 July, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 31 July, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.
