Cuba claims semifinal spot; USA defeats Guyana at CONCACAF Futsal Tournament

26/7/04 - Cuba claimed a spot into the semifinals of the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship after defeated Panama in Group B play on Monday evening at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica, while in an earlier encounter the USA topped Guyana.
Two goals from defender José Jacinto Serrano led Cuba (2-0-0, 6 Points) to a 2:0 victory over Panama (0-1-1, 1 Point) and a berth into Friday’s semifinals.

In another Group B match, the USA (1-0-1, 4 Points) posted their first victory of the 2004 CONCACAF Tournament with 6:0 blanking of Guyana (0-2-0, 0 Points).

Forward Todd Dusosky and defender Pat White scored twice, while midfielder Joel Shanker and forward Andy Gustaferro added another each for the stars & stripes, who continue their overall international futsal unbeaten streak to seven games.

The 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship continues at the Palacio de los Deportes on Tuesday (27 July) as Costa Rica and Mexico, have already earned their berths to the semifinals, will battle for the Group A crown at 20:00. In the first Group A match of the evening on Tuesday, Trinidad & Tobago faces Surinam at 18:00.

The final semifinal berth from Group B will be decided on Wednesday, 28 July as Panama takes on Guyana at 18:00, while in the second encounter Cuba meets the USA at 20:00, in a rematch of the 2000 CONCACAF Futsal Tournament semifinals, where the cubanos won 4:2 and eliminated the stars & stripes from a possible berth to the FIFA World Championships.

The CONCACAF Tournament Semifinals will take place on 30 July, with the Group B winner taking on the Group A runner-up and the Group A winner facing the runner-up from Group B.

The semifinal losers will face-off in the third-place game on 31 July, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 31 July, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.
