CONCACAF Tournament in Heredia: all details here!Costa Rica wins Group A title at 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship27/7/04 - The host Costa Rica won the Group A title at the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Tournament with a win over Mexico on Tuesday evening at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia.
Goals from forwards Mauricio Carvajal, Jefrid Ruiz, midfielder Jason Arce and defender Michael Barrantes led Group A winner Costa Rica (3-0-0, 9 Points) to a 4:0 blanking of the group’s runner-up, Mexico (2-1-0, 6 Points).
The victory also extends Costa Rica’s winning streak in CONCACAF Futsal Tournament to eight matches, with their last defeat coming on 1 September 1996, a 4:1 loss to the USA in Ciudad de Guatemala.
The ticos and tricolores advance to the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship Semifinals scheduled for Friday, 30 July at the Palacio de los Deportes. Mexico will face the Group B winner at 18:00 on Friday, while Costa Rica takes on the Group B runner-up at 20:00.
The two semifinalists from Group B will be decided on Wednesday, 28 July as Panama (0-1-1, 1 Point) takes on Guyana (0-2-0, 0 Points) at 18:00, while in the second encounter Cuba (2-0-0, 6 Points), who already claimed a spot in the semis, meets the USA (1-0-1, 4 Points) at 20:00, in a rematch of the 2000 CONCACAF Futsal Tournament semifinals, where the cubanos won 4:2 and eliminated the stars & stripes from a possible berth to the FIFA World Championships.
The semifinal losers will face-off in the third-place game on 31 July, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 31 July, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.
TRINIDAD & TOBAGO POST VICTORY OVER SURINAMTrinidad & Tobago (1-2-0, 3 Points) closed out Group A action with a 7:4 victory over Surinam (0-3-0, 0 Points) in an earlier encounter on Tuesday in Heredia, Costa Rica.
Forward Jerwyn Balthazar notched two goals, while defenders Franklyn Ollivierra, Anthony Small, Marvin Lee, midfielders Ako James and Colin Joseph all scored for the soca warriors, while forwards Gino Brandon had three tallies and Roberto Zebeda added another for the Surinamese in the loss.
