USA ties Cuba for semifinal berth at CONCACAF Futsal Tournament

28/7/04 - The USA earned the last berth into the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Tournament Semifinals by playing Cuba to a 1:1 tie in Group B on Wednesday evening at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica.
Cuba (2-0-1, 7 Points) opened the scoring with a goal by midfielder Eduardo Morales in the seventh minute of the first half. Forward Andy Gustaferro got the equalizer for the USA (1-0-2, 5 Points) via a penalty kick goal in the 30th minute of the second half.

The stars & stripes looked for the game-winner with less then two minutes remaining as they removed their goalkeeper, Scott Hileman, and added a fifth-attacker, Lee Tschantret, but the cubanos held on for the 1:1 draw.

The tie gives Cuba the Group B crown at the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Tournament and will face Group A runner-up, Mexico in the first semifinal on Friday, 30 July at the Palacio de los Deportes at 18:00, while the other semifinal has Group B runner-up, USA taking on Group A winner and the competition’s host Costa Rica at 20:00.

The semifinal losers will face-off in the third-place game on 31 July, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 31 July, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.
