USA claims 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Crown; Costa Rica takes third

31/7/04 - The USA claimed the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with a 2:0 win over Cuba in the finals held at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica on Saturday evening.
Both were battling for the Region’s Crown after achieving the two CONCACAF berths to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei on Friday.

The stars & stripes got on the board just before halftime with a tally from forward Greg Howes. Forward Don D’Ambra closed out the scoring for the USA in the 26th minute of the second half in the 2:0 final over Cuba.

This is stars & stripes first victory over the cubanos since winning the inaugural CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Ciudad de Guatemala on 7 September 1996, a 7:3 score in favor of the USA.

Earlier in the evening at the Palacio de los Deportes, Costa Rica won third-place honours at the CONCACAF tournament after trouncing Mexico 12:5.

Forward Jefrid Ruiz led the ticos offence with four goals, while forward Junior Rodriguez had three goals and midfielder Adonai Vindas and forward Carlos Chaves each scored twice in the victory. Midfielder Miguel Angel Olvera had two goals for the tricolor in the loss.
