Futsal England forge links with Romania

Jay Corran
As we reported some weeks ago (click here to read that news!), the English player Jay Corran signed a professional contract with the Romanian First division club AS Odorheiu Secuiesc. Below you can read an interesting article about his experience which the English portal Futsal England sent us.

Romanian Championship - Injuries Delay English Debuts

Jay Corran plays for Odorheiu in the Romanian Futsal Championship and talks to FutsalEngland.com about the second week of the Championship as we follow is progress as a professional player in Romania...
"An early start on the Monday (6th September) after we’d been ordered in for extra training, the coach went through where he thought we played well and where we didn’t play so well, the overall feeling was disappointment but it was the first game and we came away with something.
The training was fairly light but about halfway through I turned awkwardly and felt a sharp pain in my lower right leg, so I was forced to sit out the rest of training. That afternoon I went with a few players, already nursing injuries, to the Physio to have my injury checked. At first glance it was thought to be just a pull and I was told if it felt ok I would be able to train the next day. I was a little bewildered by this as I knew it was a bit more serious, (perhaps something got lost in translation at some point along the way).
Tuesday arrived and after a sleepless night through a lot of pain I was sure I wouldn’t be able to train and so sat out the session along with Andy whose injury had almost subsided. That afternoon I went to the Physio again who then diagnosed a rupture to my Tibialis Anterior muscle in my right leg, I was to have intensive physio treatment for a week and not to train. I was disappointed to hear that I’d probably not be fit to play the following Sunday but was glad of a clear diagnosis. Andy returned to training on Wednesday while I sat out and tried to work on my Hungarian language with a few young supporters.
My leg improved through Friday and Saturday but was only to be considered for the game as a last resort, in the end, the teams’ injury problems died down and the coach had a fully fit squad to choose from excluding myself.
The coach went with an unchanged side from the first week of the championship; we were playing a big derby game away at TG Mures. They boast a large stadium with great local support but they were to be matched by the travelling supporters from Odorhei, complete with a couple of very large drums. These supporters gave me and Andy a great reception as we took our seats to watch the game.
It was a slow first half with both teams not performing as well as hoped but in the second half the game came alive. During the first half, TG Mures had refused to commit players forward but changed their tactics after the break, this seemed to help us as on the ball, our players are technically better and enjoyed some flowing counter attacks. With 10 minutes to go we’d scored 2 more goals to lead 3-1, when the coach of TG Mures made a strange decision to bring on a 5th player as a goalkeeper, within 2 minutes we’d scored another 2 goals and had a further 3 or 4 great opportunities. The opposition coach then reverted to a straight forward keeper but it was thought the game was over. With just 3 minutes left on the clock, TG Mures scored 3 goals in 1 minute to trail just 5-4, through some bad defending but also some remarkable refereeing decisions. Fortunately we managed to hold on to record a memorable and well celebrated victory. Hopefully it will be the first of many this season.
After the game the players mixed with the supporters to thank them for their support during the game. For myself and Andy, it was a great experience to watch but we really can’t wait to be involved. As long as we’re both fit next week we’ve been told we’re in the squad so will make our league debut next Sunday. Really looking forward to it now and hope it goes well."
