Australia's first game is on Monday 22nd November, with the final of the tournament on Sunday 5th December. We wish the guys well. For the full draw of the World Cup go to www.fifa.com

SQUAD TO BE NAMED

The Australian squad for the World Cup will be named by the 1st October. Fourteen players and seven officials will be named for the 15 day tournament. A few Queensland players are in the running to be named so I wish them good luck.

We have set up a website on our home page www.qldfutsal.com.au called 'World Cup' to keep people up to date with day to day events with the Cup.

SUPPORTERS TOUR TO THE WORLD CUP

Queensland Futsal will be taking a supporters tour to the World Cup. It will leave Saturday 20th November and return Monday 6th December, after the final, with an optional stop over on the way back in Singapore.

If you want further information on the tour, email myself on qldfutsal@qldfutsal.com.au and I will send further details.

MEN TO TOUR BRAZIL IN PREPARATION

In preparation for the World Cup in Taipei, the Australian Men's team will carry out a tour of Brazil before flying directly to Taipei for the World Cup. The team leaves 29th October, playing in Brasilia and Belo Horizonte, before flying onto Taipei.

NEW WOMEN'S COACH NAMED

Queensland Director of Coaching, and Dal Ponte Vikings coach, Gui Costa has been appointed coach of the Australian National Women's Futsal team. One of his first tasks is to run a trial on the weekend of the 2nd October to select a women's side to tour Belgium at the end of the year.

AUSSIE FUTSAL WOMEN TO TOUR EUROPE

The Australian Women's Futsal team is to tour Belgium and Holland this November. The tour leaves on the 13th November and includes four major international games and a week- long tournament to finish. Head of Delegation for the tour is Craig Laffin, with Gui Costa as coach.

Final trials for the team will be held on the weekend of 2nd October in Sydney, with a squad of ten to be selected to tour. The final list will be placed on the Soccer Australia website and our own www.qldfutsal.com.au after the weekend.

It is hoped in 2005 to follow this up with an international tournament to be held in Australia.

PAUL WADSWORTH RETURNS TO NEW ZEALAND

Well after ten years in the Land of Oz, Paul Wadsworth has returned to the Land of the Long White Cloud, New Zealand.
Paul has always wanted to return to his native land to get Futsal going and his dream has come true.
He has based himself in Christchurch, and is particularly focussing on getting the sport up and running on the South Island.
He is well known to many Queenslanders, first founding and building up to 95 teams the Ipswich club and then moving to Townsville and building up to similar levels the North Queensland area. In his brief but memorable television career he also produced and hosted the weekly FUTSAL SHOW on Optus Vision television, and a similar show on FM101 Radio in Brisbane.

We wish Paul well, and hope to see him at our regional titles with many teams.
For more information, see News From Zealand below.

NEWS FROM ECUADOR TRIP

The 12 year boys returned from Ecuador, not winning many games but certainly learning a lot on how the game is played overseas, especially on the larger international court.

The Chile leg of the tour was particularly memorable, with the players having a morning tea with the Australian ambassador and the Chilean president. Thanks to our friend from Chile Patricio, for organising this and we certainly plan to go back again next year.

NEWS FROM JAPAN TRIP

The 15 boys team has a successful trip to Queensland's sister state Saityama to play a commemorative game against the Saityama state team. Thanks to Mr Sakae from Japan Futsal, and Steve Harris from Futsal-english website for helping organize other games on the trip.

We plan to make the trip an annual one and also have invited Saityama to visit us.

Spainard Jaime Yarza, Tenerife, is the new Manager of the Futsal and Beach Soccer Department at FIFA. Jaime replaces Victor Beceiro, who resigned a few months ago. Yarza was already working in FIFA in the Refereeing Department, and has been promoted to this position.

As Futsal has never been developed in Tasmania, he has decided to get it up and running (with our help). He has found a beautiful Cape Cod house at Primrose Sands on the beach, half an hour out of Hobart and welcomes all visitors.

See below article re Tasmania for more information.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

This week saw the sad death of Brian Clough, one of England's greatest football managers but also one of the most flamboyant. Many believe he should have been appointed team manager, but was considered too outspoken to be. This is more for British fans, but in memory, below are some stories and quotes about Clough. Thanks to the website www.brianclough.com

It's a cup tie with10 minutes to go, Nottingham Forest are down 1 - 0 and they've used all their subs.
For once in his life Stuart Pearce, one of the hard men of football comes off second best in a tackle.
The physio runs on the pitch to look at him and shouts back to Cloughie ...... 'He can't go back on, he's taken a knock to the head and he doesn't know who he is.'
Cloughie replies ....'that's great... tell him he's Pele and stick him up front.'

Martin O'Neill (present Celtic manager), was furious at being dropped into the reserves and he fronted Cloughie to ask why he was playing for the reserves.
He responded: "It's quite simple, young man, you're far too good to play for the third team!"

AND SOME MEMORABLE QUOTES FROM CLOUGH

"If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there." (On the importance of passing to feet.)

"I bet their dressing room will smell of garlic rather than liniment over the next few months." (On the number of French players at Arsenal)

"I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was one of the top ones." (Looking back at his success).

"On occasions I have been big headed. I think most people are when they get in the limelight. I call myself Big Head just to remind myself not to be." (explains his nickname).

"At last England have appointed a manager who speaks English better than the players." (On the appointment of Sven Goran Eriksson as England manager).

"If he'd been English or Swedish, he'd have walked in the England job." (On Martin O'Neill).

"Anybody who can do anything in Leicester besides make jumpers has got to be a genius." (A tribute to Martin O'Neill ).

"Stand up straight, get your shoulders back and get your hair cut." (Advice for young player John McGovern at Hartlepool).

"Take your hands out of your pockets." (More advice, this time for a young Trevor Francis as he receives an award).

"I only ever hit Roy the once. He got up so I couldn't have hit him very hard." (On dealing with Roy Keane).

"Walk on water? I know most people out there will be saying that instead of walking on it, I should have taken more of it with my drinks. They are absolutely right." (Reflecting on his drink problem).

"Don't send me flowers when I'm dead. If you like me, send them while I'm alive." (After the operation, which saved his life).

"Players lose you games, not tactics. There's so much rubbish talked about tactics by people who barely know how to win at dominoes." (Reflecting on England's exit from Euro 2000).

"We talk about it for twenty minutes and then we decide I was right." (On dealing with a player who disagrees).

"I want no epitaphs of profound history and all that type of thing. I contributed - I would hope they would say that, and I would hope somebody liked me," (On how he would like to be remembered).

"It was a crooked match and he was a crooked referee. That was a tournament we could and should have won." (On the 1984 UEFA Cup semi-final Forest lost to Anderlecht).

"I'm sure the England selectors thought if they took me on and gave me the job, I'd want to run the show. They were shrewd, because that's exactly what I would have done." (On not getting the England manager's job).

"If a chairman sacks the manager he initially appointed, he should go as well." (On too many managers getting the boot).

"For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. " (Referring to Sir Alex Ferguson's failure to win two successive European Cups).

"I like my women to be feminine, not sliding into tackles and covered in mud." (On women's football ).

''That Seaman is a handsome young man but he spends too much time looking in his mirror, rather than at the ball. You can't keep goal with hair like that." (On England goalkeeper David Seaman).

THAT'S ALL FOLKS.....SEE YOU NEXT WEEK
