9th WUC Futsal: Results Day 6

October 10th, 2004

Today, September 10th, was the sixth and last day of the 9th WUC Futsal in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. After a tiring tournament the teams played their placing games for the final ranking. In the afternoon the medal games were played.

SUI vs. GBR

Switzerland and Great Britain, two emerging countries of University Futsal and first time participants at the WUC Futsal, kicked-off for the 15th and 16th spot. Great Britain started the game very determined and scored the first goal of the match via Andrew Smith in the seventh minute. The Brits dominated the first half and only in the last two minutes of the game Mathieu Debonneville scored the equalizer for Switzerland. Switzerland left the dressing room with confidence as they played a totally different game in the second half. After eleven minutes they scored their second goal and they kept scoring until the end of the game beating Team Great Britain 5:1 leaving them the last and 16th spot of the championship.

HUN vs. TUR

In the game for the 13th place, Hungary and Turkey were each others equals. Neither of the teams got more than one goal ahead in the first half of the game with Raif Selden scoring for Turkey after two minutes. Hungary replied with a goal by Gabor Cserna only two minutes later. Turkey once again took the lead when Sabri Selden, the twin brother of Raif, brought the score to 2:1. Hungary countered via Fonai. Then Turkey took the lead again when Kiy drilled the ball past the Hungarian goalie. Hungary countered once more hardly a few minutes later via Fonai. In the last minute of the first half, Kovacs scored the fourth goal for Hungary sending Turkey to the dressing room with a 3:4-deficit. The first minute of the second half, Kovacs scored again, putting a 5:3 on the scoreboard for Hungary. From that moment onwards, the Hungarians took over the game and scored six more goals. Kiy smoothened the pain by scoring one more goal for Turkey. Final score: 11:4 in favour of Hungary.

ISR vs. FRA

Israel opened the scoring when Shai Zargari put a 1:0 on the scoreboard after the tenth minute of the first half. Four minutes later France countered via Jerôme Foscolo. Then Israel took the lead again via a goal by Rov Shaham going to the dressing room with a 2:1 lead. When Israel returned to the pitch they were fully determined and it showed in their game. Israel scored four more times in the second half creating a 6:1 lead. France scored twice more, resulting in a 6:3 victory for Israel.

SCG vs. SVK

Serbia and Montenegro dominated its game against Slovakia for the ninth place. Team Serbia and Montenegro outscored Slovakia 6:0. Goals by Trojanovic (2), Botovic and Surudic (hattrick).

SLO vs. POL

The game between Slovenia and Poland was a real thriller. Slovenia had taken the lead in the first half via goals by Kamberger, Rutar and Kalin, returning to the dressing room with a comfortable 3:0 lead over Poland. When Poland started its second half, it seemed as the coach had held some pep talk. Already in the first minute Poland scored via Starowicz. Piwinksi brought to score to 2:3 and Pieczynski scored the equalizer. Then Slovenia totally lost control of the game and Poland smelled victory when Roslon scored goal number four. Machura drilled in a last goal for Poland, winning the game 5:3.

CZE vs. POR

The game for the 5th place between Portugal and the Czech Republic was a very tight one. It was Team Czech Republic which opened the score via Pavel Formanek. One minute later Portugal countered via Correia. In the last minute of the first half Portugal score its second goal via Cunhan leaving the pitch with a 2:1 lead. The first minute in the second half, the Portuguese scored their third goal continuing their lead to 3:1. Nine minutes later, the Czechs came back into the game when Pleyer brought the score to 2:3. Portugal scored once more via Correia. The Czechs tried to come back and they partially did when Sluka drilled in the third goal, leaving the victory for the Portuguese. Final result: 4:3 in favour of Portugal.

ESP vs. RUS

The bronze medal game took place between host Spain and Russia. Spain had some bad luck early in the game as the ball deflected from N° 8, Marcos Latorre right into his own goal. In the fourteenth minute, Salinas scored the equalizer and a few minutes later Latorre put Spain in a 2:1 lead. In the second half the Russians came back when Levin scored the equalizer. A red card put the Russians with three players in the pitch but efficient penalty killing kept them in the game. In the last minute the Spanish coach pulled the goalie for an extra player, but in vain. The Russians however, scored their third goal ending the bronze medal dreams for Spain. Final score: 3:2 for Russia.

BRA vs. UKR – Gold Medal Game

The golden game between the Ukraine and Brazil was a game between experience and youth. The Brazilian team was a young team with a lot of talent, but it lacked the experience the Ukrainians had, especially for a championship final. The Ukrainians played their game in the first half marking three goals. Vitaliy Nesteruk scored the first goal after ten minutes. The last two minutes of the period Artem Kovalev drilled in the second goal establishing a 2:0 lead over Brazil. Half way through the second period Kovalev scored once more putting a 3:0 on the scoreboard. With a three points lead the Ukrainians consolidated their position and went into defence, preventing every offensive manoeuvre of the Brazilians. The latter had three genuine scoring opportunities but failed to use them and lost the game 3:1 whereas Ukraine took the gold and Brazil settled with the silver.
