One place up for grabs

Sunday, 10 October 2004

The lineup for the UEFA Futsal Cup last eight is nearly complete after the conclusion of the first seven first qualifying round mini-tournaments.

Going strong

As ever, the two Spanish sides will be the favourites to go all the way to next April's two-legged final after comfortably making it through their respective sections to the second qualifying round. Defending champions Boomerang Interviú FS will take part in Group A after three wins from three in Group 1. Their domestic rivals El Pozo Murcia FS will be in Group B after an equally impressive record in Group 4.

Emerging sides

There are some other heavyweight contenders still in the fray, including Belgian side Action 21 Charleroi - runners-up in 2002 and 2003, MFC Dinamo Moskva of Russia and FC Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine. There is also room for a couple of emerging sides with KMN Litija of Slovenia safely through along with FC Dorozhnik Minsk of Belarus.

Czech chance

The one remaining second qualifying round place will be contested this week over Thursday, Friday and Sunday with FK Era-Pack Chrudim of the Czech Republic hosting the Group 3 mini-tournament and hoping to continue the success of the national team. They will face stiff competition from Sporting Clube de Portugal while Politekhnik Yerevan and FC Camelot Chisinau of Armenia and Moldova respectively round out the section.
