So what is left to do?
To continue growing. As we were able to do in Singapore, this time we were again able to take hold of the situation when losing, to control the ball, and to score until winning.
You spoke of stage fright sensed in certain occasions. That has changed?
Historically, Brazil was a team we would lose to before even playing. That has changed, and now Brazil is the one with the fear of losing. We believe in ourselves and our possibilities. Brazil is a very good team with rivals it does not fear, but the defeat on Sunday will leave them with consequences ? - that they have to tighten up the national team, to renovate. It used to be that they could take players 34 years old to the world championship with no consequences: they kept on winning. That now is no longer viable.
Tactically your team is better?
They have got lots of quality, but the difference resides in that we have much more tactical mobility, more variation in the game we play. In addition, this generation of Spanish players is very daring; they do not respect myths, and Brazil was the greatest myth for them to demolish. This week I had doubts about not being able to motivate them without cracking the whip, but look what happened: They came out like wolves against Japan and made history against Brazil without any kind of respect but with education.
But Spain is confronting as much of a generational change as Brazil, the difference being their players are more technically prodigious than ours.
Yes. Our problem is that we have for a long time been working with a game consisting of four all-around players and few specialists: school teachers of everything but university professors of nothing. In any case, for the 2004 world championship I have seven or eight players who will form the backbone of the team, and those who complete the squad will mature quickly with them.
How did they celebrate their third consecutive victory over Brazil?
With much serenity and joy, mainly because of the win at home after Guatemala and Singapore. Personally I want to publicly thank the players for their efforts and devotion, for giving up one more Easter to give their all to the national team.
