RUSSIAN SUPERLEAGUE

ROUND 17

RED-WHITE FIESTA

by Vladimir Romanov

Red-blue team could rely on six points in two derby matches against Spartak, Evgeny Lovchev's team. In both postponed games of round 17 there were long-time intervals when CSKA was to score more and more. But a lot of chances were failed. And if after the first match it could be said that the Red Army, having made a draw, saved one point, on the following day the logical and really just victory was missed under tragic circumstances.

On April, 15 CSKA started with fast attacks but then was pressed in the centre of the ground. Some time later, thanks to Iskusnikh, Spartak turned its first goal opportunity into the leading score – 1:0 (or 0:1 if we mean that CSKA was a host and Spartak – a guest). The rest of the first half was controlled by CSKA opponents though the hosts could make the score equal.
The most interesting events took place during the next 20 minutes. At first Spartak doubled its leadership. Gorin scored without real resistance. The good CSKA opposition was demonstrated right after the second missed goal. The Red Army held some attack waves towards Spartak net. The red-white goalkeeper A. Evteev played an impressive match. At last Zinchenko who had not used his opportunities twice before, scored. In about forty seconds the tight shot by S. Antipov became an unsolved problem for Evteev. 2:2 – a time to start everything once again.
CSKA kept on attacking through both wings and the central part of the field. Evteev was at his best. Then CSKA defenders did not watch Ionov staying alone and waiting for a good pass. His kick looked mortal. Nobody opposed to him and a ball touched the empty net. However, CSKA did not let Spartak win. Kopeikin equaled a score.

Alexander Babkin (CSKA head coach):
- It is not easy to win such an experienced team as Spartak, Moscow. We played without three key-players: Sergueev, A. Antipov and Kolesnikov. At the second part of the match we had to play with six boys. It was difficult to save the match, but CSKA managed to do it. I thank those six players. As for the rest of my people, I have to recognize that they are not ready to fight for something real and decent in Superleague.

The second match should have ended with a CSKA victory. Red-blue players missed two goals but A. Antipov answered quickly enough. The greatest part of attacks from both sides was very dangerous but CSKA and Spartak goalkeepers caught any ball. At last Arsh kicked at a “killing distance”. The throw by Kimovsky was useless.
At the beginning of the second half CSKA occupied Spartak part of the field. Two goals more impressed red-blue fans greatly. Even local and very personal success by Spartak player Kazakov did not make them angry. Everybody saw CSKA led the game…
A minute and a half left to the end. Suddenly Spartak revived. Edu, one of four red-white Brazilian internationals, made two goals out of nothing. Five CSKA field players tried to better the situation. Without any effect. A virtual victory disappeared. Spartak fiesta came… Out of nothing.

Alexander Babkin (CSKA head coach):
- I am disappointed with the final result. There was a battle between equal sides. We were not worse than the red-white players. I cannot blame my guys. They fought all these 40 minutes. They should have been more attentive for the last minutes when Spartak was brilliant in its attacks. Just one minute, maybe a few seconds, broke our game. We again played without several guys. Zinchenko and Kolesnikov are injured. Though that is not a reason to justify a loss of three more points.
