VIETNAM TURN THE TABLE ON FILIPINOS

BANGKOK (May 7, 2005) - Vietnam outplayed Philippines 5-0 in their match for the fifth and sixth placing which was a complete reversal of their league encounter in the Asean Futsal Championship at the Hua Mak Stadium here today.

Philippines had beaten Vietnam 5-4 in the round robin phase of the competition on Friday. But today Vietnam completely turned the tables on their opponents so that the Filipinos were never really in the match.

The Vietnamese persisted with the style of play they have displayed throughout the tournament, a style more suited to football than to futsal whose smaller arena and harder playing surface make the run-past-your-opponent style of the former discipline not feasible.

But against a staid and static Filipino team, Vietnam found that style profitable and were up by three goals in the first half.

In the second half they forced more scoring opportunities but had a smaller conversion rate: they found the net twice.

The Philippines were so beaten that even when the Vietnam goal was gaping at them their forwards sent their attempts wide. Clearly, they were not the side that had beaten the Vietnamese in the league phase.

Vietnam scored through Huynh Ba Tuan in the 2nd, 22nd and 23rd minutes with Le Quoc Khong in the 4th and Hong Hai San in the 3rd provided useful backing to Ba Tuan who at one stage threatened to score at will.

INDONS LURE BRUNEI INTO DEFEAT

BANGKOK (May 7, 2005) - Brunei discovered how transient is superiority in futsal when she slumped to a 1-7 defeat to Indonesia in the third and fourth placing match in the Asean Futsal Championship at the Hua Mak Stadium here today.

Brunei beat Indonesia 3-1 in their last match in the league competition on Friday but found that it was a different Indonesia they encountered today.

The Indonesians preferred to hold back and wait for the Bruneians to make the mistakes before punching through their defence to score.

Deny Handoyo started the pattern of enticing Brunei into error before scoring on the break in the 4th minute.

Handoyo combined with Safarrudin to make those little touches that have a more telling effect on the match that outright speed and swerve. That Indonesia led 3-0 at halftime was largely due to both players. Together they scored four of the Indonesian goals in the match.

With a deft backheel in the 37th minute, Safaruddin scored one of the best goals in the tournament. And it was done with effortless ease.

Indonesia’s other scorers were Andrian Asuri (31st), David Sugiarto (36th) and Ahmad Syalbani (40th0.

Brunei netted through Shah Rzen in the 36th minute.
