Gatorade ‘Futsal’ league Into Playoffs

Cavalier’s attack was led by Kevin Davies with three goals, Stephen Davies with two goals and Norman Forbes and Pierre Lafleur with one score each.

The Gatorade Futsal Bahamas League concluded its final week of play on Wednesday, July 20, 2005. All of the teams took part in what turned out to be a night of exciting, and surprising, action.

In the first match of the night, Cavalier FC took on United Kickers FC in a match that should have been an easy one for the red and white. However, resiliency was the order on a night when the underdogs seemed to have a little more fight than normal, and United made a match of it.

Cavalier jumped to an early lead and tried to control the momentum of the game. However, United hung tough and matched Cavalier’s intensity, resulting in a 4-4 tie at the half.

When the second half resumed, Cavalier once again took a quick lead and sought to establish momentum. But that was not to be the case. The United players refuse to back down and matched the favourites goal for goal, ending with a minor upset, a 7-7 tie.

Cavalier’s attack was led by Kevin Davies with three goals, Stephen Davies with two goals and Norman Forbes and Pierre Lafleur with one score each. United’s scoring came from Granton Innis with 4 goals, Ricardo Bowe with 2 goals and Trevor McKenzie with 1 goal.

In the second match of the night, Union Peru took on cellar dwellers Bears FC, and handed them their fourth consecutive defeat of the season. The Peruvians, who sit in second place in the tables, marched to an early lead and never looked back.

Cheered on by a large contingent of supporters, the Peruvians looked like winners from the start, scoring early and often in the first half of this contest. For their part, the Bears did give a valiant effort, but it was not to be enough.

When it was all said and done, 10-4 was the final score. Saul Martinez(five goals), Marco Vidales (three goals) and Felipe Vega (two goals) handled the scoring for Union Peru, while in return Elias Sandi (two goals) and Craig Knowles (two goals) accounted for the scoring offense of the Bears.

The final match of the night was perhaps the most exciting of the season to date. League leaders Superior Warriors took on the BFA Select. With an unblemished record and a full squad in attendance, playing against a team that had not won any matches to date and had only five players, the result seemed a foregone conclusion.

But, resiliency and dogged determination was on the BFA Select side, even though the conceding of four goals in the first five minutes seemed to spell doom. The Warriors guns cooled off a bit and allowed the BFA Select to get back in. The first half ended at 5-4 in favor of the Warriors, who hoped that their numerical supremacy would give them the result they felt they deserved.

Thereafter though, each time the Warriors scored, the BFA Select responded in kind keeping the match close throughout. With four minutes left, the BFA Select tied and then proceeded to take the lead in the match at 9-8, but a late goal from the Warriors enabled them to salvage a 9-9 draw.

George Knights, Steve Jones, Keith Cargill and Rodney Bascome all scored twice each for the Warriors with Stephen Sturrup adding one more. For the BFA Select, Lionel Haven scored six times, Anton Sealey twice and Tony Singh once.

With only one make-up match to play between BFA Select and Bears FC, the league will then head into playoffs next Wednesday. BFA Select and Bears FC still have one make-up match to play, which will have to be done prior to the playoffs. Plans are being made to organize this match.

Next Wednesday, July 27, 2005, the playoff schedule is as follows:

7:00 pm 3rd place vs. 6th place

8:00 pm 4th place vs. 5th place
