Futsal home opens today

Saturday, July 30th 2005

Trinidad and Tobago's first official home for the five-a-side futsal version of football, will be launched today from 10 a.m. at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya.

Immediately after its opening, the facility will see action when Caribbean champions Trinidad and Tobago go into action against a president's XI. The Trinidad and Tobago national futsal team is coached by outstanding former national defender Clayton Morris, who welcomed the opening of the new facility.

Last year, Trinidad and Tobago won the inaugural Caribbean Futsal Championship which was played at the UWI Indoor Sports Facility. Now that futsal has an official home, Morris sees room for growth of the game and improvement in the quality of players. Plans are underway to stage a national league among local club teams at the Macoya facility.

"It's like coming to Wembley," Morris said. "Futsal is a game with a lot of excitement and gives players who never thought they would be on a national team the chance to represent Trinidad and Tobago."
