SOCCER AUSTRALIA FORMS NATIONAL FUTSAL COMMISSION The Australian Soccer Federation (Soccer Australia) formed a National Futsal Commission to oversee all the respective futsal activities in the country. The following Futsal State Federations are members of the National Futsal Commission: ACT Futsal Inc., NSW Futsal Association Inc., Queensland Futsal Association Inc., South Australia Futsal Commission, Victorian Futsal Association Inc. EUROPE
HOLLAND TO FACE BELGIUM Holland Futsal National Team will host Belgium in an international match in Goes, Netherlands on May 5. Since 1977, these two neighboring countries have met 35 times in international play with Holland winning 20, Belgium victorious in nine and six games ending in draws. The last meeting between the two nations was Dec. 22, 1999, when Belgium defeated Holland 3-2 in Four Nations Cup held in Tramagal, Portugal.
2002 FORD GENK CUP TO TAKE PLACE IN BELGIUM The 2002 Ford Genk Cup will be held in Genk, Belgium from May 8-11. The annual futsal tournament sanctioned by FIFA and Belgium's Football Association will feature 24 invited teams from around the world divided into eight groups of three for the opening round. The first-place group winners will advance to the "Cup Quarterfinals," while the eight-group runners-up will move onto the "Plate Quarterfinals." The third-place group finishers will compete in the "Bowl Quarterfinals." The quarterfinal winners will face off in each competition's semifinals, with the surviving teams moving onto their respective "Cup, Plate or Bowl" Finals.

CZECHS COACH NAMES ROSTER FOR SLOVENIA SHOWDOWN Czech Republic's Futsal National Team Head Coach Michal Striz named a 12-player roster, as the squad host Slovenia in a two-game international friendly series from May 10-11. The first game will take place in Bilovec on May 10, while the second will be held in Koprivnice the next day (May 11). The last time these two teams squared off was on Mar. 24th of this year during the 2002 Mundialito in Reggio Calabria, Italy as Slovenia topped Czech Republic 4-3 in overtime.

SLOVAKIA HOST TWO AGAINST RUSSIA Slovakia's Futsal National Team will host Russia in a two-game international friendly series in the city of Lucenec from May 24-25. These are Slovakia's first international matches since dropping a twin-bill to Spain from Nov. 12-13, 2001, while Russia is coming off a third-place finish at the 2002 Mundialito in Reggio Calabria, Italy with a 5-3 victory over Argentina on Mar. 25.
PORTUGAL TOPS GREECE Portugal's Futsal National Team topped Greece 7-4 in an exhibition match played on Apr. 24, at the Anadia Sport Hall in Kouria, Portugal. The Portugese, which was mostly composed of a "B" team, were led by midfielder Côco and forward Israel each scoring twice, while forward Konstantinos Karasavvas led the Greek offense notching two goals in the loss.
YUGOSLAVIA GOES WINLESS IN TWO-GAMES IN ITALY Yugoslavia's Futsal National Team went winless in a two-game international friendly series against the host Italy at the PalaSport San Lazzaro Arena in Padova from Apr. 23-24. After playing to a 1-1 draw in the first game the day before (Apr. 23), Italy took the second match with a 2-0 victory over Yugoslavia on Apr. 24. Midfielder Edgar Bertoni and forward Adriano Foglia scored for the Italians, while goalkeeper G. Angelini earned the shutout in goal.
HUNGARY SWEEPS TWO FROM POLAND Hungary's Futsal National Team swept a two-game series from visiting Poland outscoring them 12-5 on Apr. 10-11. After Hungary squeezed out a 5-4 win in the first game on Apr. 10, in Eger, the following day (Apr. 11) in Mezokovsed the score was different as the host crushed Poland 7-1. Hungary will now travel to Valdepenas, Spain to take on the current FIFA World Champions on May 14.
IRAN
LOZANO GIVES FIFA FUTSAL COURSES IN IRAN Spain's Futsal National Team Head Coach Javier Lozano took part in two FIFA Futsal Courses held in April in Iran. The first course took place in Tehran from Apr. 9-13, while the second one was held in Isfahan from Apr. 15-19. The three-time Asian Champions (Iran) benefited in having Lozano instructing two FIFA Futsal Courses as a total of 151 Iranian coaches attended the events. NORTH AMERICA
MILWAUKEE, PHILADELPHIA TO BATTLE FOR 2001-02 MISL CHAMPIONSHIP The Milwaukee Wave will host the Philadelphia Kixx in the third and deciding game of the best-of-three 2001-02 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Final Series on May 3. This is a winner take all match-up as the MISL regular season champions' Wave took the first game 11-4 in Milwaukee on Apr. 26, but then the Kixx even the series at 1-1 on Apr. 27, by the same score. The Wave, led by current U.S. Futsal National Team Head Coach Keith Tozer, are looking for their third consecutive indoor championship and fourth in the last five seasons. Prior to the finals, the Wave topped the Baltimore Blast 18-12 on Apr. 19, in the semifinals, while the Philadelphia Kixx defeated with the Kansas City Comets 18-13. U.S. COACH ANNOUNCES ROSTER FOR 2002 GENK CUP U.S. Futsal National Team Head Coach Keith Tozer announced on Apr. 22, the 12-player roster that will compete at the 2002 Genk Cup from May 8-11 in Genk, Belgium. This is the first U.S. trip to Belgium in nearly 10 years after dropping a 4-2 decision to the host in an international friendly on September 26, 1992 in Antwerp. The U.S. has been placed in Group G alongside host club Zvk Ford Genk and Oquido Affligem Futsal Club, both from Belgium. The U.S. roster is composed of nine players with international matches under their belts. Leading the way for the Americans is defender Sean Bowers (Baltimore Blast-MISL), who is ranked third all-time in appearances for the USA with 21. Forward Lee Tschantret (Baltimore Blast-MISL) leads the attack with six goals in 10 international appearances, while teammate Bernie Lilavois (Buena Park, Calif.) has four tallies in seven games with the USA.

TOZER NAMED MISL COACH OF THE YEAR Milwaukee Wave and U.S. Futsal National Team Head Coach Keith Tozer was named the "2001-02 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Coach of the Year" on Apr. 23. Tozer guided the Wave to a League-best 34-10 regular season record, which included a 22-0 home mark. The 45-year old skipper recorded his 500th career victory with a win over Baltimore on Apr. 12, and continues to rank as the sport of professional indoor soccer's all-time leader in coaching victories (currently has 502 wins). A four-time recipient of the "Coach of the Year honor," Tozer is in his 10th year at helm with Milwaukee where he has led the Wave to indoor league titles in 1997-98, 1999-2000, and 2000-2001.
U.S. NETMINDER GARNERS EIGHTH GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR AWARD Milwaukee Wave and veteran U.S. Futsal National Team Netminder Victor Nogueira was named the 2001-02 MISL "Goalkeeper of the Year" on Apr. 24. The honoring of Nogueira marks the eighth time that the indoor soccer legend has received the award. The 42-year old goalkeeper posted a 27-5 record during the 2001-02 MISL regular season, while registering a 9.50 points against average and a .724 save percentage. The Mozambique native, who has 16 international appearances for the USA, played in two FIFA Futsal World Championships (Hong Kong 1992, Spain 1996).
FUTSAL OTTAWA STAGE THREE EXHIBITION MATCHES Futsal Ottawa staged three exhibition matches on Apr. 12 in Ottawa, Canada, between their selected squads against Ottawa Wizards Pro Soccer Club, Laurentides Lions and Canada Women's Futsal National Team. The Canadian Women's Team easily blanked the Futsal Ottawa Women's Selection 9-0 in the opener, while in the second match Ottawa Wizards topped the Futsal Ottawa Selection "A" 8-5. The Laurentides Lions closed out the event with a 7-3 win over the Futsal Ottawa Selection "B."
SOUTH AMERICA CARLOS BARBOSA WINS CONMEBOL'S "SOUTHERN ZONE" CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Carlos Barbosa of Brazil won the "Southern Zone" of the 2002 CONMEBOL (Confederation of South America) Futsal Club Championship with a 2-0 victory over Banespa of Brazil in the finals at the Cilindro Municipal Arena in Montevideo, Uruguay on Apr. 14. Both Brazilian clubs advanced to the finals after finishing first in their respective five-team round-robin groups. Forward Francisco Anibio Costa "Indio" of Carlos Barbosa was named the tournament's "Most Valuable Player," while teammate Lavoisier Martins was named the "Best Goalkeeper." Carlos Barbosa will advance to meet the winner of the CONMEBOL "Northern Zone" Championship that will be held in Venezuela (at a later date) in a best-of-three series to crown the overall 2002 CONCMEBOL Futsal Club Champion. The Northern Zone tournament will feature respective club champions of the following South American nations: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with six-man squads and walls. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico, and Ronaldo grew up playing the game and credit Futsal with developing their skills.
