INTERNATIONAL NEWS THAILAND TO VISIT QUEENSLAND FOR TOURNAMENT AND TRAINING The big news for Queensland is that the Thailand men’s and women’s teams are coming for eleven days for a tournament and training camp in preparation for the Asian Indoor Games. They arrive Thursday 8th September and depart Monday 19th September and in this time will be staying and training at Acacia Ridge. During the day they will be either training or playing at Acacia Ridge centre. To assist them with their preparation we have hurriedly organised a tournament for them to compete in, which we are calling the DAL PONTE VIKINGS PACIFIC CUP. This will be played at Acacia Ridge Centre from Friday the 9th September to Monday 12th September, and further details are below. They will also play the Vikings men and women in full international rules games, Thursday 15th September, Saturday 17th September and Sunday 18th September. On other days they will be training at Acacia Ridge Centre, 1391 Beaudesert Road, Acacia Ridge and spectators are welcome.
VIKINGS PACIFIC CUP To assist the Thais in their visit and training camp, we have put together a tournament for men and women as above and invited some of our Dal Ponte partner Viking teams to compete. The tournament will run from 6.00 pm Friday night through to 6.00 pm Monday night on a full international court at Acacia Ridge, with games 25 minutes each way run of the clock. All teams will play each other once, in a round robin tournament.
Teams entering are: MENS: North Queensland Predators, Queensland Country, Queensland Vikings, Victorian Vipers, Tasmanian Tigers, New Zealand Southern Stars and Thailand. WOMEN: North Queensland Predators, Queensland Country, Queensland Vikings, Tasmanian Tigers, New Zealand Stars and Thailand.
We are hiring extra grandstand seating for the tournament so all are welcome to come down and watch….entry is free. We will also have the caravan and shop set up, giveaways, full canteen facilities and have arranged for videoing of the tournament, copies of which can be bought at the tournament.
Draw for the tournament is on our website.
DANIEL REID JOINS US Vikings have a new fulltime development officer in Dunedin New Zealand in Daniel Reid. Daniel was assisting Paul Wadsworth in Christchurch but is now moved to Dunedin to develop the sport in further areas of the south, especially Dunedin, Timaro and Invercargill. We play at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin, so drop in to see Daniel and say hello.
WE’RE IN ASIA Well its official, Australia is now part of Asian Football, which is a great move for Football/soccer but is even better for Futsal. With Asia hosting a number of Futsal tournaments during the year both at national level and club level, it makes it more affordable for us to access quality competitions. Another positive is that now we may be able to hold international tournaments in Australia that other nations can more easily come to, and that’s for both men and women. This will be a big step forward for elite level Futsal in this country.
FA.COM The English FA website has put some work into Futsal and on it states that more players play five a side than eleven a side football now in England. Go to www.thefa.com/Grassroots/SmallSidedFootball/ to have a look.
VISIT FROM CANADIAN FUTSAL TEAM During the July school holidays we were visited by a 16 year old girls Futsal team from Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. The girls played five games in Brisbane and then traveled on to Cairns where they had three games against local sides. A good time was had by all and we are hoping to see them visit again or us reciprocate and visit them.
VIKINGS TO VISIT CHINA Well its now all organised, the Vikings men along with an under 16 boys team are going to Chengdu China to visit and play games. Whilst there they will play in a tournament will Chendgu City, with the younger team participating in a statewide (Sichuan) Futsal tournament. The teams leave on 12th October and return on the 28th October. Thanks to Li Jing in Chengdu for organizing,

NATIONAL NEWS FOOTBALL A LEAGUE KICKS OFF The new football a league kicked off on the weekend, and one can only say it was a huge success. Total crowds of 70000 + across 4 games including the record 20,710 in Brisbane was great. I watched the double header at home on television and that coverage was also excellent. From a Futsal perspective it was great to see Michael Baird score one of Queensland’s goals and set up the other, as Michael played Futsal for us right through from under ten, and his father Leo is our current state Futsal 16 boys school and club coach.
Quiz Question: How many of the Queensland Roar players represented Queensland in Futsal in their junior years? (Answer at end of newsletter).
NATIONAL SCHOOLS All areas are in full training for the national school titles in Sydney, with training occurring on weekends in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport in Tasmania…Melbourne every Saturday in Victoria and Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Maryborough , Ennogerra and Acacia Ridge in Queensland. Can everybody please note that on the weekend of the Pacific Vikings tournament, all trainings are being shifted to Moorooka and Glenala (State training centre) for Queensland City teams. We have sent out a final letter to Queenslanders this week, and please note that if you want to have your name put on the back of your jersey it can be done for an extra $12. This will also be being offered to the other areas, and we will also be taking the name machine down to Sydney for others who may want their name on (it won’t be out at the tournament however, but visiting the accommodation centres). Congratulations to Tasmania who are bringing eleven teams for the first time.
NATIONAL CLUB National Club training started last weekend, and being the home state for the first time since 1990, we are hoping for a big performance from the Queensland sides. The tournament will be at the Gold Coast from 10th to 13th January.
STATE OF ORIGIN The annual State of Origin Futsal Challenge will be held at Coffs Harbour on the weekend of 1st and 2nd October. Last year Queensland took out the trophy and we are hoping to again. Both sides enter their open men, open women, 16 year boys and 16 year girls with teams playing each other twice…once each day…. A total of eight games. Queensland will leave by early bus Saturday morning and return Sunday afternoon.
GEORGE DICK As of a few weeks ago Football Australia Futsal Secretary George Dick has retired. George had been in the role since Soccer/Football Australia took over futsal and put a lot of time and effort in. We wish him well in retirement and thank him for his efforts. George is hoping to get up to the national club titles and say hello to everyone. Alan Vessey is now contact at FFA for Futsal related matters.
STATE NEWS
REGISTER ONLINE With signons for the Futsal summer season occurring across Australia and New Zealand over the next month, please note that in Queensland and Vikings clubs you can register online at your website. By registering online you get a discount of $5. Also go to the website to check what clubs are operating and where to sign on. Especially in the Brisbane South district we have no extra court-time anywhere so if you don’t get in early you won’t be playing.
VIKINGS ACADEMY CAMP The weekend of the 6th/7th August saw the first Vikings training camp, where both the men’s and women’s teams went away for a weekend camp at the Sunshine Coast. Two boys and two girls from each country region were also selected to attend and in total we had 22 juniors there who got to train with the Vikings. We plan to make it an annual event with children again selected from the regions to attend. JUNIOR PREMIER LEAGUE Due to popular demand we are running a junior premier league in both Cairns and Brisbane, where teams from a number of clubs in the area compete over seven weeks to be the champion team. The age groups involved are ten year boys, twelve year boys, fourteen year boys, sixteen year boys, fourteen year girls and sixteen year girls. Teams cannot be state sides or ‘poached’ and therefore all players in a side must be from the same region, and must be regularly competing in a Queensland Futsal affiliated Club. In Brisbane all games are played at Cornubia on Sunday afternoon for the seven weeks before Christmas, and in Cairns at Fretwell Park. The champion sides in each region are then invited to compete to be the champion junior Dal Ponte team in a junior Pacific league involving Tasmania and South Island NZ. For further information contact Jade Banks on j.banks@qldfutsal.com.au or 617 38752600. Otherwise there is more detailed information on our website www.qldfutsal.com.au
LUKE RETURNS FROM BRAZIL Viking Luke Haydon, who headed for Carlos Barbosa in January to play professionally has returned to Australia. Although he was playing well, and on the verge of breaking into the first team, he couldn’t get his work permit approved and had to return. However a couple of second division clubs had approached him about coming back, and at this stage he is looking at this. More later.
BRENDAN JACQUIN HEADS TO BRAZIL Brendan Jacquin, 16, from Acacia Ridge and Logan clubs, has headed to Belo Horizonte, Brazil as part of the player exchange programme Queensland Futsal and ECBF jointly run. While in Brazil Brendan will attend Futsal School Colegio Santo Antonio, and stay with a family of the school. The programme is free and all the player has to do is pay for his airline ticket. Queensland Futsal has been running this programme now for 7 years and hope it will continue for seven more. Brendon will return in January.
GEORGE BEST AND 21 OTHERS This is not a book review column, and sad to say I don’t get kickbacks for reviewing and recommending books, but there is a book I bought a few weeks ago that I strongly recommend as necessary reading for all of the parents out there who want/think their child to play for Manchester United. It’s called ‘George Best and 21 Others’ and is the life story’s of the 22 15 to 17 year olds who played the English Youth Cup Final in 1964 between Manchester United and Manchester City (obviously George Best was one of them). It follows the lives of all players after that game and where they ended up today both in employment and health. If you want details of publisher etc please email me back and I’ll pass on.
VIKING TRAVEL Want help organizing your holiday or to book an airline ticket? Ring Steve Tipler on 33447780 and he will help you. A website is presently being developed and will come later. All the profits from the travel agency are put back into the Viking’s programme to develop the sport.
