 U.S. FUTSAL TEAM OPENS 2002 GENK CUP WITH 3-1 VICTORY OVER OQUIDO AFFLIGEM OF BELGIUM
Midfielder Greg Howes Scores Twice For The USA
GENK, Belgium (May 9, 2002) - The U.S. Futsal National Team opened the 2002 Genk Cup on Wednesday night (May 8) with a 3-1 victory over Oquido Affligem of Belgium in Group G play.
The match, which was played with two 15-minute halves instead of the normal two 20-minutes, saw the USA strike first with eight seconds remaining in the first half as midfielder Greg Howes (Milwaukee Wave-MISL) scored off an assist by defender Pat White (Milwaukee Wave-MISL) to give the Americans a 1-0 edge.
In the second half, the U.S. jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring back-to-back tallies in a span of 16 seconds. Forward Dewayne Gilpatrick (Milwaukee Wave-MISL) scored off an assist by defender Sean Bowers (Baltimore Blast-MISL) to make it 2-0 in the 24th minute, while 16 seconds later Howes notched his second goal of the match for the USA.
Oquido Affligem would score a late goal with 10 seconds remaining in the game for the 3-1 final.
The win gives the Americans a 1-0 record in Group G and will close out group play against the tournament host Zvk Ford Genk (BEL) this afternoon.
2002 Genk Cup has 24 teams divided into eight groups of three for the first round group stage.
About the Genk Cup The Genk Cup is an annual 24-team tournament sanctioned by FIFA and the Belgium Football Association. The 2002 competition has eight groups three for the opening round and similar to the 2001 Singapore Tiger 5's International Tournament, the Genk Cup will have three award winners (Cup, Plate, Bowl).
The quarterfinal stage begins on Friday (May 10) as the first-place group winners advance to the "Cup Quarterfinals," while the eight-group runners-up move onto the "Plate Quarterfinals." The third-place group finishers will compete in the "Bowl Quarterfinals."
The quarterfinal winners will face off in each competition's semifinals, with the surviving teams moving onto their respective "Cup, Plate or Bowl" Finals, slated for Saturday, May 11.
