Forward Lee Tschantret Notches Two Goals as the USA Advance to Quarterfinals on Friday

GENK, Belgium (May 9, 2002) – In their first trip back to Belgium in nearly 10 years, the U.S. Futsal National Team captured the Group G Title at the 2002 Genk Cup after blanking the host Zvk Ford Genk (BEL) 5-0 in the final match of group play this afternoon.
The annual tournament sanctioned by FIFA and the Belgium Football Association, features 24 teams from around the world (futsal clubs and national teams) divided into eight groups of three for the 2002 competition that runs from May 8-11. The Americans were placed in Group G along side host club Zvk Ford Genk and Oquido Affligem Futsal Club, both from Belgium.
The U.S.-Zvk Ford Genk match, which was played with 15-minute halves instead of the normal 20-minutes, saw the USA open the scoring three minutes into the game with a tally by forward Dewayne Gilpatrick (Milwaukee Wave-MISL) for a 1-0 edge.
Two minutes later, forward Lee Tschantret (Baltimore Blast-MISL) scored off an assist by midfielder Greg Howes (Milwaukee Wave-MISL) for a 2-0 lead. After Howes increased it to 3-0 in the 12th minute mark of the first half, defender John Ball (Cleveland Crunch-MISL) gave the Americans a 4-0 advantage with a tally with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Tschantret closed out the U.S. scoring spree in the 16th minute of the final stanza with his second goal of the match.
Goalkeeper Scott Hileman (Baltimore Blast-MISL) faced six dangerous shots on goal and made four key saves for the shutout.
Prior to the match against Zvk Ford Genk, the U.S. opened Group G play with a 3-1 victory over Oquido Affligem of Belgium on Wednesday night (May 8). Howes scored twice, while Gilpatrick added another for the Americans’ first win on Belgium soil since September 27, 1992, a 4-1 victory over Hasselt F.C. in Antwerp.
With the back-to-back victories the USA clinches first-place in Group G and advances to the quarterfinals on Friday night (May 10) against the winner of Group E (Belgium clubs - Action 21 Charleroi, T-Interim Borgerhout or KF "LLAPI"-Podujeve).
The semifinals and finals are slated for Saturday, May 11.
Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with six-man squads and walls. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico and Ronaldo grew up playing the game and credit Futsal with developing their skills. U.S. Futsal is under the banner of U.S. Soccer, which is the governing body for the sport in the United States.
