Soccer giants fail to show

(Sunday, November 06, 2005)

SOCCER giants Ba and Lautoka failed to turn up yesterday at the Fiji Football Association FUTSAL Inter-District Championship.

The two giants were expected to challenge the Southerners for the five-a-side title but disappointed the organisers with their absence.

Organiser Jainendra Sukhu said they would be writing to the two districts asking for an explanation for their non-participation. "We will let them explain their side."If they don't give a satisfactory explanation they will be taken to task," Sukhu said.

He said they were happy with the standard of play by the participating teams. Defending champions Suva started its campaign on a high note and looks set to make it to the semi-final today. The capital city, which is renowned for its power in the code, has the likes of Mira Sahib, Kalivati Covu and veteran Intiaz Khan.

Suva scored a 4-1 win over Tailevu in its opening match on Friday night. Later the side overcame a star-studded Navua team boasting the likes of Seveci Rokotakala, Ben Kumar, Pita Bolatoga and Sitiveni Qarau, 3-2.

Suva was to play Nasinu late last night. Navua drew 3-3 with Nadroga in its other match. Rewa, with Marika Rodu, Samuela Vula and Roderick Kumar, was upset by Tailevu Naitasiri 3-2 yesterday.
