Keeping up the recent tradition of having interviews with the main personalities of worldwide futsal, the belgian magazine Futsal Echo directed by Cedric Bouillon this time talked with Fernando Ferretti, current coach of the catarinense club Malwee/Jaraguà (on sunday winner of the newly created Superliga, parabèns!) and former guide of the brazilian national team coach which could not reach the Chinese Taipei expected final. Ten questions to Fernando Ferretti
Malwee/Jaraguà's coach and former trainer of the brazilian national team

You have just won the Liga Futsal and the Conmebol Cup (North Zone) in Perù with Malwee/Jaraguà: where are now, and what are they saying, all the persons who were criticizing you after the defeat against Spain in Chinese Taipei?

After a career of thirty years and an endless number of titles, I have nothing to prove to anybody. Receiving critics after the World Championship is something normal in my opinion, as the main responsability is always assigned to the coach.


Talking about your experience with the Brazilian national team: which are the happiest memories and which the mistakes you have done, if any?

All memories are good. I was definitely honoured to be distinguished among the greatest coaches of Brazil, as a “captain” of the national team, one of the best of the World.


World Championship in Chinese Taipei: what really Brazil missed to win or at least to reach the final? Just in need of a better luck or more? What happened with Fininho and Manoel Tobias?

Brazil missed precision in the attacking phase, in the match against Spain. We played better than them without turning our superiority into goals. Besides, we suffered very strange goals, something rare to happen, but it happens. I don’t think we were not lucky, we just missed the skill to close a game which was clearly in our favour, especially during the extra time. About Manoel Tobias and Fininho I have to say that they were not in a good moment and for this reason they didn’t played too much. I gave them the same treatment I use with every other player, it means that I always make the best ones playing.


Now you are winning everything with Malwee and in december** you’ll have the chance to beat the paraguayan Universidad Autonoma de Asuncion and then the Intercontinental Cup. Will you manage to conquer these titles in your opinion? Do you prefer coaching a club day by day or working as national team trainer? Which is the best option for a coach?

We are dreaming with the Intercontinental Cup title which will be played in Santa Catarina, our state. I prefer coaching a team, having the time to do that. Theresults obtained with Malwee during the last five year show the work quality of the technical staff there. With no time to work, nobody can reach anything.


Ferretti and european futsal. Would you like to work in Spain, Italy or another european country? Did you got some proposal in order to do that? Is that a “door” still likely to be opened?

I have already had the honour to work in two spanish clubs (Mitsubishi Ceuta in the 91/92 season and Academia Postal de Ourense in 94/95). They were two great professional experiences, but I’m not going to reject the chance to come back in Europe once again, but now that would be just in one “big” club, ready to win. I’m definitely well, working with Malwee and in Brazil, close to my home and family, but I would be pleased to evaluate proposal from foreign countries.


What do you think about the new era of CBFS with Aecio and without Carlinhos? Were you a “Carlinhos’ man?”

I’m not a Carlinhos’ man, neither of anybody else. I’m a professional coach and I obtain respect for my work. For this reason I kept an excellent relation with Carlinhos as well as I have a good relation with Aécio , a person I admire. I would have left the national team even if Carlinhos won the elections, becouse I lost the chance to conquer the World Championship and I felt my time there was over. I had to leave this chance to another coach, and leaving my place to PC is an honour for me, as I believe he’s our best coach in Brazil.


Which is your opinion about the World Cup to be played in Brazil? Is that a good chance for futsal promotion or do you have doubts on the successful organization of the tournament in Brazil?

I believe is a great idea for Brazil to organize the next World Cup. We have all conditions to do that, and I will be in the “torcida” hoping that Brazil can conquer the title.


What do you think about european futsal, in which more and more brazilians are beeing naturalized in the respective countries where they play? Is that something good for those countries or is just going to cause the lack of youth players technical formation?

Both things are happening, in the same time. Brazil is loosing its best youth revelation players as well as the european countries keep on missing their best youth players. The problem is mainly financial, considering the frailty of the brazilian “real” in comparison with the “euro”, so that won’t be solved in a short time. What I want to defend is the professionalization of futsal in the world: if european clubs need brazilian players, they should at least pay them in the same way as happens in any other professional sport.


Yes or not: is Falcão the best player of the world?

Are there still any doubts about it? Wasn’t enough what he did during the Chinese Taipei World champs? Yes. Falcão is the best player of the world, for sure.


What kind of relations do you have with your colleagues? Each does its own work or exist a collaboration between them? Do you like anyone in particular?

Unfortunately the brazilian coaching class is not so united. The greatest part think to know more than the others and close itself in its work. They learn few things. I tried to change this kind of behaviour but is hard to do. I myself work together with one of the best brazilian coaches, Marcos Moraes (Marcao) and we do well We don’t try to prove that one is better than the other. On the opposite, we join our effort and knowledge to do the best for Malwee. In Brazil there are some young coaches I admire. I would mention the Paulo Gambier and Paulo Cardoso, without talking about our best coach who is Pc, as I already mention before, our national team coach.

Acaba de ganhar a Liga Futsal e também a Merconorte no Peru; aonde estão agora no Brasil aqueles que criticavam você pela derrota contra Espanha em Taipei?

Após 30 anos de carreira e uma infinidade de títulos, já não tenho que provar nada a ninguém. Acho normal as críticas recebidas depois do Mundial ,pois a responsabilidade maior cabe sempre ao Treinador.


Falando de sua experiência na Seleção, quais são as melhores lembranças, quais os erros (se tem erros) que acha ter cometido?

Todas as recordações são boas. Me senti muito honrado de ser distinguido dentre tantos grandes treinadores do Brasil, como o comandante da Seleção Brasileira, uma das maiores do planeta.


No Mundial em Taipei, o que faltou de verdade, ao Brasil, para ganhar ou pelo menos estar na final? Só foi falta de sorte ou algo mais? O que houve com Fininho e Manoel Tobias?

Ao Brasil faltou acerto na pontaria, na partida contra a Espanha. Jogamos melhor mas não transformamos nossa superioridade em gols. E além disso tomamos uns gols muito estranhos, algo raro de acontecer mas que acontecem. Não acho que foi falta de sorte nossa, faltou foi competência para definir um jogo claramente a nosso favor, principalmente na prorrogação. Quanto a Manoel Tobias e Fininho, não estavam num bom momento, e por isso jogaram pouco. Dei a eles o mesmo tratamento que dou a qualquer jogador, ou seja, joga sempre o melhor.


Agora está ganhando tudo com Malwee, e tem a posibilidade de derrotar a Universidad Autonoma de Asuncion em dezembro** e depois a Copa Intercontinental? Você irá alcançar estes objetivos? Prefere enfrentar um clube cada dia ou ser técnico de Seleção? O que é melhor para um treinador?

Estamos sonhando com título da Copa Intercontinental que vai ser jogada em Santa Catarina ,nosso estado. Eu prefiro uma equipe que tenha tempo para treinar. Os resultados da Malwee, nestes 5 anos, mostram a qualidade do trabalho da Comissão Técnica que está lá. Sem tempo para trabalhar, ninguém consegue nada.


Ferretti, e o futsal europeu. Gostaria de treinar na Espanha, Itália o outro país europeu? Teve propostas para fazer? É uma opção que ainda pode ser aberta?

Eu já tive a honra de trabalhar em duas equipes espanholas (Mitisubishi de Ceuta na temporada 91/92 e Academia Postal de Orense na temporada 94/95). Foram duas grandes experiências profissionais, mas não descarto ir a Europa outra vez; mas agora, só numa grande equipe, pronta para vencer. Estou muitíssimo bem na Malwee e no Brasil, perto de casa e da família, mas estudaria com carinho um convite.


O que você acha do novo curso da CBFS, com Aécio e sem Carlinhos? Você era o "homem" de Carlinhos? Qual é o estado do futsal brasileiro? Segue melhorando ou não?

Não sou o "homem" de Carlinhos ou de quem quer que seja. Sou profissional e me faço respeitar e por isso, mantive com Carlinhos um excelente relacionamento, como também tenho boa relação com Dr. Aécio, a quem admiro. Ainda que Carlinhos tivesse vencido, eu teria saído da Seleção, pois perdi o Mundial e senti que meu tempo havia passado. Teria que dar lugar a outro, aliás, dar lugar ao PC é uma honra, pois se trata de nosso melhor treinador.


O que acha que o Brasil vai organizar para o Mundial 2008, uma boa possibilidade para a difusão, ou tem dúvidas sobre o êxito do torneio no Brasil?

Acho ótima a idéia do Brasil patrocinar o Mundial. Temos todas as condições para fazê-lo e estarei na torcida para que o Brasil conquiste o título.


O que você acha do futsal europeu, onde sempre mais jogadores brasileiros se naturalizam nos países aonde atuam? É positivo para estes países ou vai causar uma falta de formação nos jovens locais?

Acontecem as duas situações, ao mesmo tempo. O Brasil perde muito cedo suas jovens revelações e os países europeus ficam sem o melhor das suas revelações. Como o problema é econômico, ou seja, a fragilidade do real perante ao euro, isso não será corrigido a curto prazo. O que defendo é a profissionalização do Futsal no mundo. Se os clubes europeus necessitam de jogadores brasileiros, que paguem por eles como acontece em qualquer desporto profissional.


Sim ou não: Falcão é o melhor do mundo?

Ainda há dúvida? Será que o que ele fez no Mundial de Taipei não foi suficiente? Sim. Falcão é o melhor jogador do mundo, disparado.


Que relação você tem com seus "colegas" treinadores? Cada um faz seu trabalho ou tem colaboração? Você gosta de algum técnico em particular?

Infelizmente, a classe dos treinadores brasileiros não é muito unida. A maioria acha que sabe mais que o outro e se fecha. Aprendem pouco. Tenho tentado mudar esse modo de agir mas é difícil. Eu mesmo trabalho junto com outro dos maiores treinadores brasileiros, o Prof. Marcos Moraes e nos damos muito bem. Não procuramos mostrar que somos um melhor que o outro. Ao contrário juntamos esforços e conhecimento para dar o melhor a Malwee. No Brasil, existem alguns jovens treinadores brasileiros a quem admiro. Destacaria o Prof. Paulo Gambier e o Prof. Paulo Cardoso, isso sem falar no melhor deles que o já citado PC, nosso treinador da seleção.
