GHAZ RAMLI Jan 24SUBANG Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) captain Mohd Zary Afandi, 27, is knocking on the door of the national side.
In the first leg of the Celcom National Futsal League circuit which was held at the Johor Baru Municipal Council (MPJB) last weekend, Zary steered his team to second place, earning the squad four points.
“With the introduction of the national league, many new players have emerged which made us work harder to keep our aim to become champions intact,” said Zary, who is a contractor by profession.
Zary, who is in his second year with MPSJ, picked up the sport after graduating three years ago.
“I was with the Real 18 team in which we only used to play one-day tournaments,” said the Petaling Jaya-born player.
Last year, Zary assisted MPSJ to win the Red Bull Challenge, the Rakan Muda Challenge and the MPSJ Trophy but only managed to emerge runners-up at the Norlin-Pahang tournament in Kuantan.
“Without key player Jerry Pareira, who is injured, the team have stepped up their game to keep the team’s chances alive. We, however, have to improve our fitness as the other teams have shown to be much fitter than us,” added Zary, who once represented the country in Iran in 2004.
Zary will next be competing in the second leg which will be held in Kuantan on Feb 10.
