FUTSAL/National League: Surprise for Adi

KUALA LUMPUR CITY HALL’S (DBKL) qualification to the second round of the inaugural Celcom National Futsal League comes as a surprise even to their skipper Adi Azuan Zainal.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old striker is confident of a podium finish in the tournament which offers RM 25,000 to the champions.

“The team were assembled just a few weeks before the tournament, which started yesterday. Besides mid-fielder Mohamad Fairuz and me, the other players in the squad are from DBKL’s football team and have not played much futsal,” said Adi.

“We may have gone through the second round with a little bit of luck but the team have improved a lot after the first round and I’m confident of a better placing in the second round,” said the Kuala Lumpur-born lad.

With former Kuala Lumpur skipper Razip Ismail as coach, Adi believes DBKL will be able to cause a few more upsets.

“We have been able to reach the second round. With his ideas and tactics we might be able to pull through,” said Adi.

However, with the presence of Adi, the team made it to the second round of the tournament after finishing behind Central Zone first round champions, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

Adi, who was in the national squad who toured Vietnam in 2003 gained his futsal knowledge after competing in local futsal leagues.

“I started playing football but it was hard to sustain a place in the team so I picked futsal to excel in,” said Adi, who was in Kuala Lumpur’s 2001 President’s Cup side.

The next year he left the City side to play for DBKL in which he was also employed by City Hall as an officer in their Sports Unit.

“I’m still in DBKL’s football squad and when the season starts in April, I prefer playing futsal as the game is much faster,” said Adi.

DBKL leave for Kuatan tomorrow night for the second-leg which kicks-off on Thursday at Sukpa,Kuantan.

Currently heading the points are Alor Star Municipal Council (MBSA) with four points followed closely by MPSJ who have three points.
