KUALA LUMPUR CITY HALL’S (DBKL) qualification for the final round of the inaugural Celcom National Futsal League comes as a surprise to skipper Adi Azuan Zainal.

The 26-year-old striker is confident of a podium finish for DBKL in the tournament, which offers RM25,000 to the champions.

“The team were assembled just a few weeks before the tournament. Besides midfielder Mohamad Fairuz and myself, the other players in the squad are from DBKL’s football team and have not played much futsal,” said Adi.

“We were lucky to have gone through the first round but the team have improved a lot since the second round. I’m confident of a better showing in the final round,” said Adi, who hails from Kuala Lumpur.

With former KL skipper Razip Ismail (left) as coach, Adi believes DBKL will be able to create a few more upsets.

In the second round, DBKL finished behind Central Zone first round champions, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

Adi, who was in the national squad who toured Vietnam in 2003, garnered experience from competing in local leagues.

“I started playing football but it was hard to maintain a place in the team. I then decided on excelling in futsal instead,” said Adi, who was in KL’s 2001 President’s Cup side.

In 2002, Adi eft the City side to play for DBKL, where he was also employed as an officer in their Sports Unit.

“I’m still in DBKL’s football squad and though the new season will be starting in April, I am still opting for futsal as the game is much faster,” said Adi.
