Joan and Joan joined in battle

Thursday, 20 April 2006

With the UEFA Futsal Cup down to its final two teams, a pair of prolific scorers who share the same name have every chance of being this season's top marksman in Europe.

Pushing hard
With a total of 454 goals in this season's competition to date, Joan of MFK Dinamo Moskva and Joan of Boomerang Interviú have scored eight and seven goals respectively. They have a way to go to catch Predrag Rajiæ who struck 12 times before KMF Marbo Beograd went out in the second qualifying round. Also in with a shout of is Dinamo's Cirilo, on seven, and Boomerang's Marquinho and Andreu, who both have six. Former Dinamo star Sergei Ivanov top scored last season with 14 goals overall, although it was in vain as his side lost in the final.

Tale of the tape
As well as his unerring accuracy in front of goal, Dinamo's Joan is regarded for his defensive abilities. He stands at just 1.62m but the 29-year-old Brazilian more than imposes himself when the opportunity arises, not least with his five-goal haul in the first qualifying round against FS Cap del Carrer of Andorra. Joan of Boomerang is a 30-year-old Spanish international who had the honour of starring in the 2001/02 UEFA Futsal Cup for Playas de Castellón FS. He scored eleven times in the eight-team tournament used to determine the winner of the inaugural edition, and was also part of the Boomerang team that won two seasons later against SL Benfica.
