Malaysia back in semis hunt after win over Vietnam

BANGKOK: Malaysia bounced back with a 9-4 win over Vietnam in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) futsal tournament at the Hua Mak Indoor Stadium here yesterday to keep alive their slim hopes to qualify for the semi-finals.

After suffering an embarrassing 2-3 defeat by Cambodia in their opening match on Tuesday, the Malaysians must now beat Indonesia in their last group fixture today.

Indonesia on six points from wins over Vietnam (6-3) and Cambodia (3-1) are virtually through to the semi-finals. The other slot is a fight between Malaysia and Cambodia, who have three points each.

Malaysian manager Hamidin Mohd Amin said that they needed full points from Indonesia to have a chance to advance.

“It could come down to goal difference depending on the outcome of the other match between Cambodia and Vietnam,” he said.

Malaysia have themselves to blame to find themselves in a tight spot. They muffed it up against Cambodia, whom they thrashed 9-2 in the AFC qualifying round match in Kuantan barely a week ago.

If Malaysia lose to Indonesia, they will need a favour from Vietnam to beat Cambodia for the chance to sneak in on goal difference.

RESULTS

Group B: Malaysia 9 Indonesia 4, Indonesia 3 Cambodia 1.

Futsal: Shell-shocked Malaysia fight back

MALAYSIA’S Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship hopes were given a lifeline when they beat Vietnam 9-4 at the Huamak Stadium in Bangkok yesterday.

The national team fell to a shock 3-2 defeat to Cambodia in their opening match on Tuesday, but were a transformed side yesterday, racing to a 4-1 lead at the break before wrapping up the match comfortably after the breather.

"The players knew that it was do-or-die today, and they delivered what was expected of them," said Malaysian chief coach P. Balakrishnan.

"They did a lot better than what they showed yesterday (Tuesday).

"But our next mission is to get the better of Indonesia tomorrow (today) and make sure that we get into the semi-finals."

The Malaysians, left with the prospect of being the first team to exit the competition after their loss to Cambodia, defended with discipline in the opening minutes of the match.

In the ninth minute, Mohd Azari Thinain ran down the left flank to blast home the ball to give Malaysia an early lead.

Three minutes later, Mohd Azari made it two-up for Malaysia when he made good on a pass from K. Thayalan.
