Rekord NetFutsal league kicks off Futsal is a new sport in South Africa based on soccer and has been played by Brazilians for years.
According to the chairman of Teifa (Tshwane East indoor football association), Lyle Jacobs, it is because of futsal that the Brazilians are such good soccer players.
The game is played with seven players per side and is quicker because the ball travels faster.
“It is great for skills development,” Lyle says.
Teifa would like more people to play futsal. “We received good reaction from the last event on March 11 but we want to get more teams and players involved,” he says.
On Wednesday, May 3, 27 senior teams took part in friendly games played at the Tshwane Events Centre.
“At the moment, we want to make players aware of the game and give them the opportunity to learn the game.”
Teifa’s dream is to have different leagues. “There should be a bus drivers’ league, a street league or any type of league one can think of,” says Lyle.
The futsal senior league starts on May 10 at the Tshwane Events Centre.
“We would really like to have 36 teams because then it would be a fair league with three rounds. As it is now some teams will play each other more than once.”
He urges senior teams, including university teams, open teams and clubs to enter the league.
