Futsal tournament to be held in Dubai later this month

Staff Report

Dubai: Dubai will be hosting a five-a-side Futsal indoor football tournament from June 23-30.

The competition, to be held at the Hayya! Sports Club indoor hall at The Meadows Village, will feature 32 teams and run along Fifa World Cup rules.

The event is being organised by Delwood with the aim of stimulating the sports and entertainment scene in the UAE, in cooperation with Active Sports.

The 32 participating teams to be divided into eight groups, will be fighting for a total cash prize of Dh 10,000.

Each team will be drawn to carry the name of one of the participating nations at the 2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany.

The Dubai Futsal Cup 2006 is open to players above 18 years and with a valid UAE resident status. Registration will be accepted until midnight of June 19.

"We are excited to be part of this truly special event," stated John Bateson, Recreation Manager of Hayya! Sports Club.

"This will be the first time for many players in Dubai to play on the official Futsal surface, and some of my coaches are really looking forward to test the court themselves," added Cees Valk, Managing Director of Active Sports. Entry fee per team will be Dh500, and has to be paid in full before the deadline.

The round-robin competition will start on June 23, while the knock-out stage involving the best 16 teams will be held on June 30.

Entry fee for children is Dh10, while adults will have to pay Dh15, inclusive of live coverage of the 2006 Fifa World Cup matches on a big screen.
