Futsal grips Herefordshire

Tuesday, 25 July 2006

Three Junior Teams from Herefordshire travelled to Sheffield to take part in the FA National Junior Futsal Finals, building on the popularity of the game at all age ranges throughout the country.

Futsal is a version of small-sided football that offers players the opportunity to rehearse key techniques and tactical decision making in a game where reduced space and the proximity of opponents enhances the involvement of all participants.

The FA National Junior Futsal Finals gave the teams from Herefordshire the chance to put their skills and game plans into practice against strong opponents from around the country.

The U10 girl’s side, managed by Simone Quinn and Deidre Graham, consisted of 11 girls who recently attended the HFA Girls Futsal Centre. This team played exceptionally well and finished runners up for their age group. All players received a medal and certificate to mark their achievement.

The U14 girl’s side, consisting of players from Minster College, recent winners of the HFA Secondary School Girls Futsal League, had mixed fortunes against physical and technical opponents who defended extremely well preventing the Herefordshire side from scoring on several occasions.

The U14 boys squad who also attend Futsal Coaching in Hereford, led by Sean Dipple and Kieron Powis, finished 3rd in their tournament, again a fantastic achievement.

Alexis Lunn, Herefordshire Girls and Women’s Football Development Officer commented on the positive experience had throughout the day by all players, coaches, managers and parents involved.

She said: "The finals allowed the girls and boys from Herefordshire to put their futsal coaching into practice on the national stage and I believe every player has benefited from this experience. The aim now is to promote Futsal in Hereford
