Irena Ilesic CujovicSlovenia wins European University Futsal ChampionshipAt the end of July, Slovenia won the European Futsal Championship, which was organised by the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and took place in Novi Sad, with participants from universities from Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine. The competition was a high level, with plenty of tough and interesting matches.
The Slovenian team showed a lot of spirit and skill throughout the tournament, especially in the semi-final against Italy and the final against Croatia, which was the high point of the tournament. Here the Slovenians from the university of Ljubljana beat the Croatian team from the University of Zagreb for the second time in the tournament (the first time having been in the group stage). In the final, Slovenian coach Zoran Tesko and assistant Simon Rosic were faced with a difficult task at half time: their team was 1-0 down. But they provided good advice and restored the players' energy, with the Slovenians scoring twice in the second half to secur a tight 2-1 victory.
Slovenia thus went home from Novi Sad with the greatest possible motivation - which would be needed for the World University Futsal Championship taking place in Poland from 28 August to 3 September, Slovenia facing Brazil, Slovakia and the United Kingdom in their group.
In the next two years, Slovenia will host both these top university competitions. In 2007, the European University Futsal Championship will be hosted in the Slovenian seaside town of Koper, which will also act as the venue for the World University Futsal Championship i 2008
