Another exciting week of indoor soccer came to an end during the Bahamas Football Association's (BFA) Futsal League last week. This men's masters soccer league is played on a regular basis at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium.
Earlier this week, Bears FC defeated United FC with a score of thirteen to five and defending champions, the Superior Warriors, secured a win over a less focussed Cavalier FC.
Cavalier was the team with the edge, since they have the tournament's leader in goal scoring, Kevin Davies, with a total of 27 goals. However, they still failed to take advantage of the opportunity to win. Nevertheless, Davies said: "It's good to still be able to perform, and play soccer with guys my age." Davies sees this annual tournament as a way to stay active, exercise regularly, and as a stress reliever.
"Soccer is my comfort zone," Davies noted. On the tournament in general, he believes that "the guys are still competitive and compete in a fun way. We were a little flat and too relaxed." And as a result of such fact, he explained that they suffered a loss.
"We just need to come out with more energy for our next game." he noted. Secretary General of BFA, Lionel Haven, happens to be a player on one of the teams, and is the second highest scorer in the league. "It's competitive and most of the guys playing, participate for fun," Haven said.
However, as a player, Haven said that "even though my duties and responsibilities are administration, the reason for me playing is because of my passion for the game." With it being a masters league, he said that "its aim is to target the older guys who still want to kick around and have a little fun." Haven said that other than just being something good for the older players, it can also be a very good teaching tool. "Therefore, we are looking to open this league up later on into open divisions and youth divisions," he added.
This tournament requires players to have much quicker control. It enhances speed of action, speed of reaction, and speed of control, which help players to improve their skills for the outdoor game. Additionally, Haven said that they are currently in the process of creating a women's soccer division to play within the Futsal tournament.
He noted that they have already played a few exhibition games for the women, and that they performed quite well. The league comprises of five teams, namely, the Cavalier FC, Superior Warriors, Bears FC, United FC and All Black. Each game includes two-half's of 20 minutes each. There are five players on each team, which include a goal keeper and four field players.
The current leader for the tournament is Cavalier FC, with a record of six wins and one loss. They are followed by the defending champions of the tournament, Superior Warriors, who also hold a six to one win/loss record.
Bears FC is in third place, with a record of two to five, United FC is in fourth place, with a record of two to three and All Black has been shut out for the entire season, with a disappointing record of zero to six. Play is scheduled to continue next week, with Cavalier FC taking on United FC and team All Black will square off against Bears FC.
