Press release from the Bahamas Football AssociationFutsal Regular Season Concludes With Surprise FinishThe Gatorade Futsal League in New Providence regular season match play concluded last Monday with one match, one that actually determined the league winners. Superior Warriors took on United FC in the final match and needed to win convincingly, having to win by more than 12 goals to claim the league title. They did this and then some, with an onslaught that started
in the first minute and only let up with the final whistle. When it was all said and done, Superior had amassed 23 goals, the most scored in any match on the season, and only conceded 4. This gave them the league title on goal difference over Cavalier FC. Superior set themselves up for this shot by defeating Cavalier three weeks ago 14-7, and with both teams having only one loss, that to each other, goal difference became the defining factor. Although Cavalier scored 6 more goals than the Warriors, they also conceded far more, some 14 goals more, and this was the difference between the two. This gives the Warriors their second league title, having also won in the inaugural season last year. Only the Knock Out Cup left to play for now, and all indications are that these same two teams could very well met in the finals. The final league standings show Superior Warriors at the top, followed by Cavalier FC, United FC, Bears FC and then All Black. Some 320 goals were scored over the course of the short season, with Cavalier FC racking up the most with 102. Bears FC had the record of conceding the most goals, 88 on the season. Individually, Lionel Haven, of Cavalier FC, was the league’s leading scorer with 33 goals, followed by Kevin Davies, also of Cavalier FC with 27 and Steve Jones of Superior Warriors with 26.
The league will take a one week break on Monday, September 18, 2006 and resume on Monday, September 25, 2006 with the two play-off matches. This break will allow the teams to prepare themselves for the Cup competition. In the first, Cavalier FC will take on United FC and in the second Superior Warriors will meet up with Bears FC. The Cup will give the other teams the opportunity to get their revenge on the Warriors, but the Warriors will certainly make a run for this title, having missed out on it last year, losing to eventual winners Union Peru. All to play for, before another exciting Futsal season draws to a close.
