Rutherford players put best foot forward in sport of futsal

Thursday, 12 October 2006

Rutherford Technology High School (RTHS) continues to produce talented athletes with five students representing Northern NSW in the sport of futsal last week.
Year 10 boys Marcio Augusto and Michael Fleming played with the 16-years boys' team at Minto, while Lara Pilton, Krystal Anderson and Kate Fleming were a part of the the 14-years girls' team which competed in the championships at Liverpool's Whitlam Centre.

Futsal is a modified form of football which is played indoors using a smaller and heavier ball than the outdoor game.

All five students play soccer during the winter months, Augusto and Anderson played for the Hunter Valley Hawks this winter while the other three turned out for the Rutherford Dragons, but they are all inexperienced futsal players.
Only Augusto had competed in the national titles before and he admitted it was a challenge coming up against players who train and play the game on a regular basis.

"It was a good experience playing against players who play it all the time," he said.

"It was a real learning experience."

Both teams enjoyed one win each at the championships and all players enjoyed the opportunity to have fun and refine their skills for the outdoor game.
