Short on goals but not heart

THE goals were lacking but the effort and heart was not when the Western under 10s boys Futsal team contested the state titles in Bonnyrigg, Sydney, late last month.

A 2-all draw was the best result the side, which contained Bathurst duo Jack Press and Mark Prosser, managed but NSW Futsal still gave Western an invitation to the national titles to be played at Canberra in January.

Press, who had never played Futsal before attending this tournament, was especially impressive and was asked to trial for the NSW team.

The first game for Western, who were coached by David Pressley of Young, was against competition favourites Sydney City.

While City were experienced Futsal exponents, only one member of the Western side had previously played.

By half-time the game was well out of Western's reach, but they improved in the second stanza to see the final score at 11-1.

The second game was against another tough opponent, but despite having just one training session prior to the tournament, Western made a promising start with two goals.

Though their rivals Magic still prevailed, the 5-2 result was a good effort from Western.

With their confident having a boost from this game, Western found themselves up 2-1 with only a few minutes remaining in their third match.

However, their rivals equalised through Kid Power, bringing to an end what was a very tough day.

With no chance of making the finals Western still approached day two with enthusiasm, going down 8-3 to The Aliens.

Pressley said he was pleased with his side given the lack of Futsal experience they had and that they were drawn from a wide area, unlike other sides who play together on a regular basis.
