Futsal kicks off

Rod Thompson

SOCCER superstars Pele, Zico and Socrates grew up playing the game - and credit it with developing their skills.
It is played in all the continents of the world by more than 100 countries, boasting in excess of 12 million players.

It is also the Federation Internationale de Football Association's (FIFA) official indoor football game which is, essentially, a scaled down version of the outdoor game.

Now, futsal has arrived in Port Macquarie.

The Vikings Futsal Club is kicking off a competition at the Indoor Sports Stadium each Monday evening.

"Ten teams started proceedings this week, but we can field another 10 sides," co-ordinator Merrie Hunt said.

"Matches are contested every Monday from 5pm.

"Futsal is played five-on-five on a smaller field, roughly basketball court-sized, with a smaller (size 3-4) ball.

"It also includes touchline boundaries - there are no walls or net in play.

"This is the game that outdoor football players, around the globe, take part in when they are indoors to refine and maintain their control skills and touch.

"It is superior to walled or net football in terms of developing better skills and technique.

"In Futsal, players are constantly reminded to play the same quality control game that is required for success in the outdoor game."
