The NationalHighlands schools futsal challenge in GorokaGOROKA will host the first Highlands region Besta School Futsal challenge.
The tournament will be held at the National Sports Institute from Dec 4-8.
Chairman of the organising committee Paddy Kelly and secretary/teasurer Gideon Jeffrey were confident that it would be successful despite short notice.
The school futsal challenge is an exciting new concept for soccer in the region in that it is the first time that a regional five-a-side competition is to be held in the Highlands.
They have sent invitations to all schools in the region to participate in the competition that will be taking place during the last week of the school year.
Any schools or organisations, who are interested, can contact Gideon at NSI to obtain details of the challenge on telephone 732-2391/2664 or fax 732-1941.
Kelly said participating schools would be required to pay a nomination fee of K150 and a player registration fee of K2 per player.
Payment should be made to the School Soccer Federation account at the ANZ bank Goroka Branch, account number 11536540.
The competition is open to boys and girls in Under 12 and Under 14 age groups.
Players, who are 12 or 14 years of age or under at the time of the competition are eligible to play.
All teams will be required to provide proof of birth dates to the organising committee.
Schools will be allowed to register up to a maximum of 10 players per team with only five allowed on the field at any one time.
From the squad of 10 players unlimited substitutions will be allowed.
This is a competition for schools and all players must be full time students of the school they represent.
He said a maximum of 25 teams per age division would be accepted and selection will be on a “first come, first serve” basis.
Kelly said there would be no prize money on offer as it is expected children will play for the love of the game. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the winners and runners-up in each division with all players will receive certificates of participation.
The organising committee would also like teachers, who are willing to referee at the games, to contact Geoffrey.
