Northern Advocate Futsal finds fit, fast and eager following15.11.2006 Whangarei's outpost of Brazilian football, or futsal, as it is known, continues to gain popularity among its converts - and a trip to Brazil, planned for next year, is certain to create further interest.
The game is popular in the football off season in particular and a recent tournament at Kamo High School gymnasium drew over 70 young players.
"The level of skill shown by the players was incredible, and the speed and intensity of some of the matches was almost frightening,'' futsal coach Paulo Gomes said.
The tournament was for the club's registered players only and was an opportunity for them to apply their skills in a competitive atmosphere.
A large number of goals were scored and equally impressive defensive work came from goal keepers Scott Dinsdale (13) and Hayden Juranovich (12).
"Part of our intention for the tournament was to give us an opportunity to finalise the names of 30 players to form an academy squad," Gomes said.
In July or September next year the club is planning to send a team to Brazil to be hosted by the Minas Club for three weeks of futsal training.
Gomes said the club will soon begin to apply for grants and begin fundraising to help finance the trip.
