Jo's bound for Canberra

BENDIGO'S Jo Hill will represent Victoria at the Australian National Futsal Championships next week, despite only just taking up the indoor game of soccer recently.

Jo had never played Futsal before she was one of 36 players to try out for the Victorian under-12 girls team in September.

However, the promising young player impressed selectors at the try-outs, earning a place in the squad of 10 to play at the national championships, which start in Canberra on Monday.

The 10-year-old will be the youngest member of the Victorian side, which will play games against the ACT Cobras, ACT Colts, and New South Wales Thunder.

Although she is the only girl from Bendigo to have made the final squad of 10, Erin Kirkpatrick is an emergency. Jo may have only just taken up the sport of Futsal recently, but she has been playing outdoor soccer for the past four years.

She plays on a wing for the Epsom under-10 girls side, coached by Peter Watson, in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League.

The White Hills Primary School student is also a member of the junior Vipers' program.

The Classic Donut Company has kicked in to support Jo's trip to Canberra.

More than 100 teams will compete at the national championships, with teams lining up from all across Australia, plus the Solomon Islands.

Age groups range from under-10 through to open for both male and females.

Bendigo also has two other representatives competing at the national championships.

Eaglehawk midfielder Simon Doherty and Epsom's Jared Ridsdale are in the Victorian under-16 boys' team.
