Fantastic finals in first ever Futsal 5-a-side competition

A staggering 58 goals were scored in the four finals of the inaugural WDSL Futsal - the official UEFA and FIFA version of indoor 5-a-side football - event which was staged on Saturday December 30 at the Newtown Community Centre.

Mark Lennon's hat-trick paved the way for Ardmore Rovers to take the under-11 Division 1 honours as they defeated Aughrim Rangers 10-2.

With Andrew Bartley bagging a brace, Wolfe Tone Youth Club 'A' overcame Wicklow Rovers 'B' by a 6-2 score-line in the under-11 Division 2 decider.

In the Division 3 final of the under-11s, Daniel Blackburn's six-goal salvo proved the difference between champions Enniskerry and Wolfe Tone 'B'.

The under-12 contest was an enthralling encounter which featured no less than 21 goals.

Despite trailing 10-5, St. Anthony's rallied to defeat Newtown Juniors 11-10 with Dean Caul registering the vital score.

In the only 3rd/4th place play-off to take place, Newtown beat Aughrim Rangers with Stephen Davis netting three times in a 10-6 success in the under-11 Division 3.

'It was a great day, with large crowds and exiting football. It was the first time we'd run such a competition in Wicklow and it was a great success' said FAI Regional Development Officer Paul Sheridan.
