The Jakarta PostITB hosts futsal challenge Sunday, January 28, 2007 Ardi Wirdana, Contributor, Bandung
Last week a group of Bandung University of Technology students demonstrated they were not only good at maths and science but also at competitive sport, organizing a week-long university futsal competition in Bandung.
The PS ITB Futsal Challenge was staged daily from Jan. 15 through Jan. 21, 2007 at ITB's GSG Center.
Organized by the ITB Soccer Association, preparations for the regional level event began in October.
The games attracted a large amount of interest from young men and women, with the tournament divided into 12 men's and six women's teams.
Universities taking part included UNPAD,UPI and ITENAS.
As expected, the tournament provided fierce and fast-flowing entertainment from the male competitors. The surprise, however, came from the female teams, which displayed unerringly high levels of skill and technique -- something neither the organizing committee nor the spectators expected.
Interestingly, the final matches in both groups involved UNPAD and UPI players. The outcome of the clashes, however, could not have been more different.
In the men's encounter, the match ended with a 3-2 win for UNPAD, while the women's final saw UPI outplay UNPAD and finish the match with a convincing 4-0 score line.
Though far from extravagant, the event was well-managed and provided an outlet for energetic students to demonstrate their skills in one of Indonesia's fastest growing sports.
As Robi, a member of the event's organizing committee, explained: "one of our main motivations in organizing this event is to prove to everyone that we can achieve things."
