Coast girls shine in Futsal final

THREE Sunshine Coast players helped the under-13 Queensland girls’ futsal side to a finals berth at the National Futsal Titles at the Australian Institute of Sport early last month. Mieka Thorogood (Chancellor College), Rebecca Stott (Kawana State School) and goalkeeper Ilona Lefevre (Nambour Christian College) were all part of the Queensland Vikings outfit that went down in a thriller to NSW Thunder in the final. After five wins and a draw from their eight qualifying matches, the Vikings advanced to the final courtesy of a comfortable 6-2 victory over the ACT, with Stott and Thorogood instrumental in both attack and defence and Lefevre stopping numerous shots on goal.

New South Wales were the first to get a goal on the board from a corner kick to take a 1-0 halftime lead. They doubled their advantage in similar circumstances halfway the the second stanza, before a goal from Queensland 90 seconds from fulltime gave them a late sniff. The Blues hung on to their advantage to take the title, but Thorogood said the trio were determined to go one better next year. "Yeah I suppose it was a bit disappointing (to lose the final), but it was good to get that far," she said. "I’ve played soccer for seven years and futsal for three. I stay in defence most of the time, but you have to be able to play all positions."
