Historic grand final for Maccabi futsal

Joshua Levi

AFTER only six months in existence, the Maccabi Futsal Club first-grade team has reached the grand final of the NSW Premier League after defeating West City Crusaders 2-0 on the weekend.

The team, which has been playing as the Greater Western Sydney Vikings because the Maccabi Club was not established at the start of the season, defeated the minor premiers in the major semifinal to secure the grand-final position.

Goalkeeper Dale Levein said it was a dominating win on Saturday night. “We had at least six other good chances on goal, we really controlled the game,” Levein said.

The opening goal was scored after Slava Platkov took the ball down the court, passing by two Crusaders, and then crossed into Josh Kacen, who put the ball into the back of the net.

Daniel Nadel then finished off the game with a goal after a “brilliant move that saw every player touch the ball,” according to Levein. Although the move did not directly result in a goal, the defence was run off its feet and could not stop Nadel as he scored the final goal of the match to give the Vikings a 2-0 victory.

Throughout the qualifying rounds, the team finished in second position in the Thunder Conference with six wins, five losses and three draws from 14 games.

The only team to win more matches prior to the semifinals was the West City Crusaders.

The team will play the winner of the minor semi final, which is played this Saturday night, in the grand final.
