Spectacular send-off for the eircom U21 Futsal League

Saturday, 17 February 2007

Bohemians (2) 7 – 8 Bray Wanderers (6)

NIALL MERRIMAN was a four goal hero as Bray Wanderers recorded the first victory of the eircom under-21 Futsal League in a thriller against Bohemians at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

Bray took the lead through Merriman but Brian Kelly equalised with a
brilliant long range strike.

Wanderers hit a rich run of form just before half-time when Brian Gartland tapped home from close range then Merriman scored with a free-kick.

David O’Sullivan made it 4-1 with a clever dribble and finish via a
deflection then Merriman and O’Sullivan each scored either side of a Ciaran Foy goal to leave it 6-2 to Bray at the break.

The second half started at a frenetic pace. Ian Byrne pulled one back for Bohs early in the second half but Merriman again responded. Kelly grabbed his second of the day almost immediately afterwards.

Robbie Manley capped off a neat move to make it 8-4 to Bray but Bohs cut the lead back to three once again when Alan Lynch finished from the tightest of angle.

The young Bohs side showed great heart to set about cutting that lead with goals by Sean Trout and Sean Fay leaving it at 8-7 with just over a minute left on the clock. The performance of keeper Gavin Snodgrass was pivotal for Bray at this time.

Fay had twice hit the post before that and in the last minute Manley hit the Bohs upright on a Bray counterattack. A real thriller ended with just the minimum separating them.

Saturday, 17 February 2007

Monaghan Utd (1) 4 – 9 Shamrock Rovers (3)

SHAMROCK ROVERS produced a powerful second half display to run out
comfortable winners in their opening fixture in the new eircom FAI U21 Futsal League at the National Basketball Arena.

Rovers took the lead through Mark Langtry’s powerful drive six minutes into the game after a measured opening from both sides.

Stephen Donegan increased the Hoops lead four minutes later after latching onto a brilliant split pass by Gary Hilliard and rounding goalkeeper Paul Whelan.

Whelan had saved a ten-metre penalty from Rovers’ Dane Massey before Ger Reilly capped off a brilliant individual run to get Rovers back in the game.

The Hoops didn’t need long to extend their lead again with Ciaran Kilduff cutting inside to fire home with a low strike in the dying seconds of the first half.

Tommy Toal made it 3-2 with a classy finish from the right three minutes into the second half to ensure the Hoops couldn’t rest easily for long.

Brendan Dawson put Rovers two in front once more from the penalty spot after Toal was penalised. Ian McCluskey responded not long afterwards to make it 4-3.

Goalkeeper Whelan then suffered the nightmare experience of allowing a back pass from Khalid Hussein slip under his foot and into the net. Kilduff made it 6-3 seconds later.

Saturday, 17 February 2007

UCD (3) 6 - 5 St Patrick’s Athletic (2)

UCD had to show real discipline and spirit to hang on for the three points in another classic eircom U21 Futsal clash at the National Basketball Arena.

Kieran Harte fired UCD into the lead in the third minute and Conan Byrne slotted home from close range 60 seconds later to give the Students a solid start.

After weathering the storm the Saints broke their deadlock in the tenth minute when Joe Hayden made a cutting run to set up Adam Crowther for a neat finish.

Ger Callaghan put UCD 3-1 up but then Crowther was the hero once more for his side when he produced a crisp low drive that beat Students goalkeeper Declan O’Donnell all ends up.

Hayden made it 3-3 with a neat close range finish four minutes into the second half but UCD took just a matter of seconds to go back in front through Greg Bolger.

Greg Bolger stretched the Students’ lead two minutes and Byrne nicked his second of the game 60 seconds later as UCD moved 6-3 ahead.

Kevin Cornwall then really had the Saints back in the game with the next two goals thanks to two clever finishes, the second coming with less than two minutes left on the clock.

Rovers go Top of eircom FAI Under 21 Futsal League in Dramatic Fashion

Sunday, 25 February 2007

Shamrock Rovers 7-6 UCD

Kilduff opened the scoring after two minutes and 30 seconds when he capped off a three-man break by rounding keeper Declan O’Donnell to poke home.

A very tight game was always going to be a test for both sides and mistakes would be costly.

UCD drew level with eight minutes left in the first half after Hoops keeper John Perkins failed to hold a shot by Eoin O Cinneide and Kieran Harte tapped home the loose ball.

Kilduff showed his quality in front of goal two minutes later to put Rovers back in the lead, rolling his marker before slotting under the keeper.

The Hoops No 10 then went even better four minutes before the break when he produced a Thierry Henry-style back-heel to make it 3-1.

John Brophy snuck in to prod home to get the Students back in the tie just before half-time. Kilduff continued his stunning form in front of goal when he grabbed two goals in the space of ten seconds to put Rovers 5-2 up less than two minutes into the second half.

UCD are a resilient side and it was no surprise when they pulled one back through Damien Kelly and then Kelly added another from a free-kick to make it 5-4 five minutes into the half.

The Students kept up the pressure and Harte grabbed his second of the day to sidefoot home three minutes later to level the scoring.

With just over two minutes left Kilduff’s incredible performance continued when he grabbed his sixth goal of the day but it was short-lived joy as Tim Purcell equalised with UCD’s next attack.

Kilduff’s personal display was completed with three seconds left on the clock when he smashed in his seventh goal of the day to seal the three points.

SHAMROCK ROVERS: John Perkins; Brendan Dawson, Keith Lyons, David Vickery, Ciaran Kilduff, Darren Murphy, Stephen Donegan, Mark Langtry, Wayne Greaves, Trevor Boyle, Shane Cranny, Glenn Walsh. Goals: Kilduff 7.

UCD: Declan O’Donnell; Ger O’Callaghan, David Last, Tim Purcell, Kieran Harte, Killian Gallagher, John Brophy, Damien Kelly, Greg Bolger, Eoin O’Cinneide. Goals: Harte 2, Brophy, Kelly 2, Purcell.

Drogheda 6-6 Bray Wanderers

Davis O’Sullivan hit four goals as Bray Wanderers grabbed a last gasp equaliser in a thrilling FAI Under-21 Futsal League clash at DCU.

Both sides maintain their unbeaten record after this fixture but Drogheda will be less happy as it is their second draw. O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Wanderers in the fifth minute when he finished off a lightening counter-attack.

After a tight opening period, Drogheda levelled when Aaron Timmons snuck in to slot home an equaliser in the ninth minute. Bray responded well and Jack Douglas put them back in front within two minutes but Timmons levelled it again a minute later after great work by Monday Awoyomi.

Brian Gartland kept the nip and tuck story going when he fired in a low drive 60 seconds after Drogheda’s second equaliser then O’Sullivan showed real perseverance to make it 4-2.

Paul Cobbe then produced a stunning long range strike to get United back in the game four minutes before the break and to he then hit the crossbar with another effort seconds later.

Palnaref Matundo produced a sensational finish from the tightest of angles to level matters eight minutes into a tight second half.

The tide shifted in Drogheda’s favour 60 seconds later when Matundo won a penalty that Gavin Whelan converted to put his side in front for the first time in the game.

Bray levelled with just less than five minutes left after O’Sullivan completed his hat-trick by converting a ten-metre penalty.

In futsal, ten-metre penalties are awarded against a team that exceeds the permitted five fouls in a half. Drogheda got the perfect response when Timmons completed his own hat-trick a minute later to make it 6-5.

Despite the seconds ticking away, Bray held their composure and with just 12 seconds left on the clock, O’Sullivan slipped home his fourth of the day to level up a classic game.

O’Sullivan could have snatched the winner but the hooter to end the tie went just before he managed to connect so the game ended in a draw.

Bray Wanderers: Gavin Snodgrass; Brian Gartland, Wayne Byrne, Jack Douglas, Sean Fitzgerald, David O’Sullivan, Jonathan Meagher, Robert Manley. Goals: O’Sullivan 4, Douglas, Gartland.

Drogheda Utd: Gabriel Sabatini; Gareth Whelan, Jamie Walsh, Monday Awoyomi, Paul Cobbe, Polnaref Matundo, Aaron Timmons. Goals: Timmons 3, Cobbe, Matundo, Whelan.
