Welsh Futsal Cup – 2007

Newcomers Wrexham almost pulled off a shock victory over the favourites Deeside Dragons in the final of the Welsh Futsal Cup held at NEWI on Sunday.

Frenchman Amin Boine was outstanding in the Wrexham line-up, providing direction and purpose in both attack and defence.

The Dragons greater experience eventually carried them through to a well deserved 1- 0 victory, following a well taken goal from a corner.

Whilst the Dragons continue to lead the way in setting standards on the Welsh Futsal scene, the skills on display from several other teams in this competition are testimony to the rapid development of Welsh Futsal.

Futsal Conwy finished in 3rd place following a play-off with Glamorgan Academicals that had to be decided on sudden death penalties.

College team NEWI of Wrexham were winners of the Welsh Futsal Plate competition.

Dragons player Eddie Bryers was the outstanding player in the tournament , picking up both the “Player of the Tournament Award” and the “Top Goal Scorer Award” – Roberto of Glamorgan Academicals was selected as the tournaments top goal-keeper.

A 20 man “Welsh Development Squad” was selected to continue the development of Welsh players towards eventual representative international competition.

The Development Squad will play exhibition games to assist in the development of Futsal within Wales; there will also be invitations extended to European teams to play the squad in friendlies.
