USC to hold futsal event

Thursday, March 29, 2007

FOOTBALL lovers will get the chance to pursue their love minus the stifling heat of the sun early next month as the University of San Carlos (USC) is planning to host a futsal tournament.

The contest, which is set to start early April, is organized by USC coach and former national team mainstay Joshua Fegidero and will be staged at the USC main gym.

Unlike its 11-a-side brother, futsal only has five players per team including the keeper and uses a smaller ball with a lower bounce better suited for the indoor play.

Fegidero is also planning to have the event sanctioned by the Cebu Football Association so the champion can represent Cebu in the national futsal meet later this summer.

CebuFA president Jonathan Maximo is amenable to the idea and will agree to let the champion team represent the city as long as the event will be open for all.

“If it will be just by invitation, some of the teams might question why they were not able to join,” said Maximo.

This will be the second time that Cebu will send a team to the national futsal finals after Hiroshi represented Cebu in the finals two years ago.

Meanwhile, Maximo is hoping the Philippine Football Federation can hold tryouts in the provinces for the national futsal team.

A Philippine team is currently participating in the Asian Football Confederation Championships after finishing second in the qualifying in Chinese Taipei last month.

In the AFC Championships, the Philippines lost a close match to Indonesia, 0-1, and got routed by Malaysia, 4-12. (ML)
