Heartbreak for Vietnam at SEA Futsal Championships

Vietnam missed its chance for the bronze at the fifth Southeast Asian Futsal Championships in Thailand, after a heartbreaking shoot-out loss to Malaysia on Saturday.

Vietnam got off to a good start, jumping out to a two-goal lead, but the scoring leveled off at 6-6, and when the dust settled, Vietnam went down 3-1 on a penalty shootout.

Nguyen Bao Quan had goals in the 14th and 15th minutes to bring Vietnam to a 2-0 lead.

The result changed to 2-1, then 3-2 and 4-2 for Vietnam in the first half.

After the break, Malaysia scored three unanswered goals to lead 5-4 before Vietnam leveled and went ahead with 6-5.

But Malaysia leveled in the dying minutes of the game, forcing the teams to the penalty shootout.

The final featured Thailand versus Australia, with the host Thais making no mistake, pulverizing their Aussie rivals 7-1 to take the futsal title.

This week’s tournament was held at Hua Mak sports complex in Bangkok.
