Malaysia hand local side heartbreaking loss

03-04-2007

HA NOI — Viet Nam missed their chance for the bronze at the fifth Southeast Asian Futsal Championships in Thailand last Saturday, going down 3-1on penalties to Malaysia.

Viet Nam got off to a good start after a devastating 4-1 loss to title contenders Australia in the semi-final last Friday.

The win seemed assured when Viet Nam got ahead by two goals, but Malaysian players refused to give up and tied the game at 6-6.

Nguyen Bao Quan was responsible for the two goal lead, scored only a minute apart, early in the match.

Malaysia had an answer of their own with a point, then faltered again when Viet Nam scored twice more before the half finished.

After the break, Malaysia took control of the game and scored three times to lead 5-4 before Viet Nam matched their goals and scored another of their own.

But the Malaysians gambled in the dying minutes of the game and tied it up for a third time, forcing a penalty shootout.

Thailand, who trounced Malaysia in the semis 13-0, took on Australia in the finals to win decisively with a score of 7-1. — VNS
