Nguyen Bao Quan was responsible for the two goal lead, scored only a minute apart, early in the match.
Malaysia had an answer of their own with a point, then faltered again when Viet Nam scored twice more before the half finished.
After the break, Malaysia took control of the game and scored three times to lead 5-4 before Viet Nam matched their goals and scored another of their own.
