UEFA Executive Committee Cardiff decisions

New format of UEFA European Football Championship only possible from 2016 At the first day of its two-day meeting in Cardiff, Wales, the UEFA Executive Committee, chaired by UEFA President Michel Platini, took the following decisions, outside of the decision on the host(s) of UEFA EURO 2012 that will be announced tomorrow morning.
The Executive Committee agreed with the timeline proposed for conducting the study into the expansion of the UEFA European Football Championship from 16 to 24 teams, and for an Executive Committee decision on the issue in November/December 2007. However, any potential change to the tournament structure would only have effect from the 2016 Championship onwards.

The Executive Committee approved the launch of an experimental European Under-21 Futsal Tournament starting as from 2008.

The Executive Committee approved seven new members of the UEFA Grassroots Charter as proposed by the Technical Development Committee, namely; Belgium, Croatia, France, FYR of Macedonia, Greece, Spain and Turkey.

They also approved a technical support programme for teams eliminated in the preliminary round of the UEFA European Women’s Championship 2007/09.

Finally, the Executive Committee approved the regulations for the following tournaments:
• UEFA Champions League 2007/08
• UEFA Cup 2007/08
• UEFA Intertoto Cup 2007/08
• UEFA Women’s Cup 2007/08
• UEFA Futsal Cup 2007/08

Tomorrow the UEFA Executive Committee will meet at Cardiff City Hall, from 09:00 to 10:30 (local time) in order to take the decision on the host(s) for UEFA EURO 2012, before the public announcement of this is made, also at Cardiff City Hall, immediately afterwards.
