Angola Considered A Reference In Southern Africa

Luanda, 04/25- Angola was considered a reference country in terms of five-a-side soccer (Futsal) in southern Africa, during a seminar held on 17-21 April, in Maputo, Mozambique.

Speaking to Angop this Wednesday, the chairman of the Angolan Futsal Federation (FAFUSA), Luis Mourão, who attended the forum that was organised by FIFA, emphasised that the success the country has had in international competitions influence this kind of considerations from the delegates.

Angola has been participating in in several tournaments, with highlight to the presence of the senior male national team in the first and second editions of the futsal world cup (Mundialito) held in the Portuguese regions of Mangualde, in 2005, in which the country ended in the second place, and in Monte Gordo in 2006, finishing in the third position.

Angola also won Mozambique`s Easter Tournament in 2006, besides participating in the first games of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community, held in Macau last year.

According to FAFUSA chairman, during the seminar, attended by all SADC members, the participants decided to propose to the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), the dispute of several futsal tournaments, aimed at expanding this sport. The forum also discussed the next five-a-side soccer world cup, which will take place in Brazil, in 2008.

Africa only participates with one team in the world cup, however, the continent intends to request one more place.
